Stair Tread Install - Prep Question

We’re remodeling a stair case that was once carpeted. The existing construction treads were worn down in some areas so we’re trying to level them out before gluing down (using gorilla glue construction adhesive) the new wood treads on top.

Dumb question here, but is it okay to use plastic shims and screw them into the existing tread (as shown)? Just want to make sure this approach won’t lead to squeaks or some other unforeseen

problem.

Should be okay. Make sure that you use adhesive bead thick enough to contact the bottom of each tread. Will you pin them with some small nails while the glue cures, or set a weight on top?

Have you measured the rise and the run of each tread when it is FINISHED? Have you measured the rise at the top and at the bottom of the stairs? Are they within CODE requirements?

The shims are fine. I doubt you'll have any problems with inspection.

Did you dry fit the treads and notice a bounce?

@Timothy Winzell - I wasn't planning on using nails because that could pucker the tread finish (water based)

@Sammy - Yes, I did a dry fit, but I don't know what a "bounce is"... What do you mean?

The shims are essentially filling in the worn down areas of the construction treads. The construction adhesive could have filled the gap, but I wanted to make sure it cures level. See exhibit below.

Wait! Not using nails??? Hold on. You are fully aware that Gorilla glue fails faster than you would ever think possible, RIGHT? Do NOT rely on gimicky glue commercials. They are cr@p! Too many times things fail at precisely the wrong time with these 'As seen on TV' products.

Use the correct PL product along with nails. 'Cause what's another $40 on the RIGHT glue vs. the lawsuit over an improperly installed stair tread causing back/head/neck injuries?

And a bounce means 'movement' up and down as you stress the plank (bounce = same as a trampoline bounce...bounce means vertical movement).

@SJ McCarthy These treads have a somewhat elaborate finish on them, and I'm told that punching a nail into the tread will pucker the finish.

Regarding the adhesive, it's not glue, rather it's construction adhesive. This adhesive was 4x the price of all other construction adhesives at Home Depot, so I'm assuming it's top notch.

Personally, I wouldn't trust just construction adhesive for something that gets walked on every day, especially with the irregularities you're dealing with and the shimming you're doing. I'd be putting in some countersunk nails or trim head screws around the perimeter of each tread.

Thanks for all the comments. I'll have to look into this a bit more.

Thanks @Joseph Corlett, LLC. I ran two kerf cuts along the bottom of the treads to help promote adhesion, but if you have any prep/application tips (or Do's and Don'ts), I'd love to hear them.
