Cabinets or countertops?

last modified: 5 years ago

We are looking at painting our kitchen cabinets (currently white) to a green-gray paint color (see pic). We are also changing out the cabinet hardware (see pic). Question comes at to: 1. If we keep countertops which paint color. OR 2. Would money be better spent changing out countertops vs painting cabinets? Our 20 yr old granite countertops (Uba Tuba) are in great condition just outdated(?)

Does your paint company have a color visualizer so you can see what the color looks like in a room? Example: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/visualizer#/active

while your pale sage colors are nice, it's really not going to update much.

the Uba as your backsplash makes the kitchen appear very dark. going slightly darker on the cabs won't change that.

To have cabinets properly/professionally painted, isn't cheap. have you gotten estimates?

Are the cabinets already painted? (If so, the prep work to remove that paint will take more work)

If they are factory painted they will still need to be sanded, primed, sanded and sprayed.

5K would be a decent price for your size kitchen, and probably the cheapest estimate. (do NOT hire a house painter to do this. you need a cabinet professional. if someone quotes you 3K and paints them on site, you're in for trouble)

however, you could spend 2K or so and get a new backsplash.

then I'd switch out the heavy blind to an inset blind (tiling all the way around the window) You'd have more light.

And you could paint your island the sage color. (I'd prob opt for the new countertops and backsplash first)

If you are going to have them painted, have the painters carpenters add a larger crown and fill in the gap to the ceiling.

your island looks white and cabinets look cream is it just lighting are they white I don't know why you'd want green gray cabs with black counters white would look better

Thanks Angel. We're looking at replacing backsplash. Window treatment will be replaced once other improvements are made.

I agree with @Beth H. : - the dark backsplash is the culprit here. I am not a fan of Uba Tuba usually, but in this case the edge profile is clean/not dated-looking and the counters mostly read as black against the light cabs. I would keep them and spend the money on a new, much lighter-colored backsplash, then paint just the island (maybe using a color that is part of your new backsplash?), paint the walls and get a new window treatment.

Thank you. Looking at replacing backsplash. Kitchen walls have already been painted (BM Edgecomb Gray). Also looking at replacing window treatment. Again, thank you for your feedback.

If you ever decide to paint cabinets & change countertop, wait about 3 -6 months to see how well the new paint is holding up after use. I have had several clients over the years, come to me after they painted their cabinets to redo their kitchen again. What happened was they painted cabinets & put new countertop on at around the same time. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, not long after, it became apparent the paint was not holding up as well as they had hoped. They said never again to re-painting cabinets & bought new cabinets the next time. But what really upset them was having to rebuy countertop again within 3 years! Ouch on the $money$ lost :( I know others who have had success using professional refinishing companies professionally spray their cabinets as well. But either way, I think it's better to wait no matter who paints them. Patience pays in that situation.

    My two cents.....

Your kitchen is lovely and yes, I would not pick your counter top, but I can certainly live with it, with a few changes. Your lighting will make all the difference, regarding the color your counter gives off.

Keep the counter tops, keep cabinet color, change back splash, bring cabinets to ceiling with nice crown molding. Change valance on window.

Pick paint for walls last. Paint is always done last.

No matter how you choose to decorate, please continue to post your kitchen. We love seeing the update :)

Millworkman -- That's the kind of snark people have been complaining about on these boards. It's unwarranted. She indicated her appreciation, which is enough. And, it's only been two hours since her last reply, so she may be back. If she doesn't come back, though, that's okay. She doesn't owe this board a dissertation personal reply to every response.
