Could you take a picture with the (empty) pots in situ? My fear is that they are too small to make a statement but I could be misconceiving the scale.

I agree with floral, you could put the planters your family bought you by the columns, and get something bigger for along side your beautiful front door

There are a lot of beautiful features that you already have. Love the brick!! I’d remove the mailbox altogether or add something more stylish. For sure paint the door!! Or maybe get a new one. I’d paint it black. The red clashes the brick. The light is fine. But has room to be updated. Please post more pictures from further back.

Bigger light and one on each side would help. I can’t see your entire home but the red doors fight with the brick or quarry tile flooring. A different color would depend on the look of the façade so I can’t make any recommendations. The doors themselves arre beautiful! Would also replace mailbox with an all brass or black one, and you need lovely house numbers somewhere. As to the plants /color they will be determined by your plant zone and by the overall color scheme of your home. Again, impossible to recommend without the context of the house. Congratulations on your new home!

My houzz app isn't notifying of replies so I had no idea there were responses to my post! If I wanted to relocate my mailbox, where should I put the new one? I ask because the door on the right is somewhat non functional (it can open for large appliances or furniture). The main door is the left one. I've wanted to put seasonal decorative stuff by the right door, but it would get in the way of the usps worker. Do you have any suggestions?

Looks like you have an overhang. Putting plants under an overhand is a recipe for disappointment. Unless they are tucked in *just* under the overhang, they won't likely live more than a few weeks.

As a professional horticulturist, I can tell you that plants rarely survive long at all under an overhang. Even with an irrigation system, plants want natural rain water. Even with some light coming in at a slant, plants want overall light on all four sides. Even with some air circulating on some sides, plants need air circulation on all sides. While some plants might survive not getting all of those things, I don't know of any plant that can survive without any of them.

I'm in southern California, where all of our gardens survive nearly 95% on irrigation and no rain.

It's relatively windy in my area, so I'm not really concerned about air circulation (near Ventura/Santa Barbara area).

I'm not sure about the light though. It gets direct scorching sun during the hottest parts of the day from noon to 3pm. Given my climate, I'm actually afraid there's too much light for anything requiring part sun, and too little light for anything requiring full sun.

Great. Plants are cheap, so it'll be easy to experiment with different plants!

Go to Frontgate or Ballard and get a doormat that is as wide as your double front door. Also, consider a new light fixture that is about twice as large as the one you have currently. If possible, add a matching one on the other side too.
