Center curve hole

I’m trying to figure out how you would make the center curved hole. Will be working it in two pieces, since I can’t get a big enough piece of wood.

Preferably on a lathe, but lacking that, I'd use a round nosed chisel and work towards the center hole, then finish with a scraper and sanding. Have you tried a real lumber retailer for the right sized piece of wood?

It’s for a Japanese craft called Kumihimo you can braid belts, necklaces, bracelets and such. I haven’t looked since I’m trying to get the information for the wood worker in the family.
