Wall mount sinks

I love the look of wall mounted vintage sinks. My husband gave it a thumbs down expressing concerns over how the pipes will look over time- corrosion, that etc. We do have hard water. Any have any experience they can share?

If you have hard water, why don’t you get a water softener?

(you're talking about the drain pipe, yes?) Why would hard water inside your pipes affect the outside of that drain pipe if it's not leaking? Inside maybe, but that's going to happen either way. The exterior of those pipes don't even get wet! what causes most of that corrosion that your DH is worried about is O2, humidity , and chemical reactions between the diff metals (brass, copper, steel) within the pipe itself.

I believe it's called Galvanic Corrosion. (nickel coating, diff metals the pipe is made with, scratches in the finish that allow humidity and water to react, etc.)

If you're using copper pipes, you don't want Steel or Iron anywhere near it.

All you have to do is use the proper pipes, and coat them with a sealant that keeps the corrosion at bay. ProtectaClear or Everbrite I believe are two that could work.

so talk it over w/husband after researching these issues, and I believe you should be able to move forward w/the sink you like.

    (a water softener doesn't always solve problems. plus, they're a PIA )

I love the look, too. I‘ve lived in areas with extremely hard water and it never affected the looks of the pipes. Would love to see “afters” if you do these. :)

I have a vanity with exposed water delivery pipes (copper) and chrome plated drain pipe. There is NO visible corrosion.

I have no idea why anyone would want this look but as for the upkeep and corrosion really not an issue.

    Also love the look!

“Fantasy‘s fake farm no storage look”. Ridiculous thing to say. There are plenty of applications for these, or, g** forbid someone just likes them.

At least, using a farmhouse sink in a Brooklyn brownstone isn't seen as a form of cultural appropriation. (Not yet anyway.) Challenging your master's word is another thing entirely, little lady!

Looks nice but seems impractical. It would not work for me. Where is anything stored? So every time I want to brush my teeth I have to walk somewhere else to get my toothbrush and toothpaste? I want to wash my face so have to go to wherever the face wash is stored and any other product that is used at the sink? And where do you place anything down?

Do note that it is possible to install chrome plated drain pipes. That way you don’t see old galvanized pipes beneath the sink.

Be sure your plumber knows the drain and lines will be showing so the installation is square to the sink. The plumbing behind the wall must pierce the wall in exactly the right place to be unobtrusive. The master bath in one of our houses had a wall hung sink and the previous owner stored toilet bowl cleaner, shower cleaner, bowl brush, and Comet were on the floor underneath and in plain sight. It was very unattractive to me. My current powder room has a tiny vanity because I want a place for extra tp, cleaning supplies, air freshener, and extra guest soaps. As much as I love the wall hung sink look, it would not work for me. But I do love people who don’t follow the crowd. Keep in mind, the pipes could be painted in the future- think of matching pipe color to wallpaper!

Have your sink at the house before he begins the inside the wall prep work to show the plumber exactly what he will install. Also have several pictures of your inspiration pictures so there is no question about your expectations.
