Replace, reface or paint?

our kitchen cabinets are mid 1990’s, maple. We love the black granite but need to bring the back splash and cabinets up to date. Our favorite look is white oak cabinets but that could get $$! what’s our best options if we don’t want to spend a fortune on the project?

Here's a refaced kitchen project we did several years ago for a kitchen that looks a lot like yours. We re-painted AND changed out the door/drawer fronts.

Your cabinets look to be in very good shape, and are not really outdated in style. Natural wood is coming back strongly, I think.

The backsplash paired with the gray wall is the big issue IMO.

I would suggest first of all replacing the outdated backsplash, and paint the walls, in a lighter, brighter, complementary to both cabs and counter color. You could go with various blues, or greens, or stick with a white.

Add some nice runners with color to the floor, to break up the sameness. Add some trim to the window and paint. Reupholster your stools in a color, too.

Then see if you still dislike the finish on the cabinets.

What's your budget? Cabinets are usually the most expensive element in a kitchen and the iffiest to get right when refacing or painting. Replacing them is going to cost at least double those two options.

If it were my kitchen and I was looking to do a lot with a tight budget, I wouldn't touch the cabinets beyond changing the hardware. They look to be in good shape and the maple is a nice light warm colour (on my screen at least). I'd replace the backsplash with a warm off-white subway tile (with matching grout) to lighten the vertical plane and find a way to remove the pot rack. It's practical but not offering much aesthetic appeal. Recover the stools with a new fabric (or replace the stools with new if these are uncomfortable) and "style" the counter. Possibly a fresh coat of paint and new over the sink light fixture.

Add a colorful rug. It will bring color to an otherwise gold and black room. You can add a few accessories to the counter in one color from the rug.

I should add this is the look I love. White oak with the dark countertop.

The maple cabinets work well with your floors. I'd paint the walls to get rid of the gray and remove the heavy pot rack. If it was my kitchen, I'd also change the countertops and backsplash to a warm white, but if you're keeping the black countertops, I'd also keep your backsplash.

Your inspiration picture is gorgeous. Have you priced new cabinets? Professional cabinet painting? How far will painting your current cabinets get you to the look you love? Notice that the cabinets in the inspo pic go to the ceiling and the door styles don't exactly match yours.

Some Pros will see your current kitchen and suggest you square off your island as the curved design isn't current. And while you're at it, is the layout really working for you? What does the other wall look like? Etc. Project creep strikes again. :)

I had a similar kitchen and for years considered painting and only wish I had done sooner. It has been transformed and love the look. I went with black on the bottom as I wanted lower section not to be interrupted (bluish grey uppers). It took over 20 hours to prep and paint, in case you are considering a DIY. Saved a ton of money. Lots of people will say self painting is a big mistake. After one year, I have touched up with a Q-tip 3 times around one handle of the most used cupboard. Really important to do it right.

Your inspiration picture is lovely and hope you look into further. I also love backsplash used. New lighting, hardware and island stools will finish it off. The rounded counter is dated, but If you paint yourself perhaps money could be spent updating.

If not ready to commit, a new backsplash would make a big difference.

Your cabinets are really pretty. If you’re happy with the granite, I’d suggest you replace your splash, paint your walls, ditch the pot rack, and get a new light fixture.
