What color is your furniture? It looks really pink against the walls.

The three sofas are too matchy, so hope you remove at least one when you add the blue chairs. Agree with other comments about plants and tall draperies that pull too each side of each window.

Cannot comment further without information on your plans of what style you want and want furniture you are planning on keeping and the function of the room.

Ideally would want photos of all 4 walls.

Before doing anything at this time, I’d hold off until you have the blue chairs. I would add large colorful art above couch.

So we are planning to keep all the existing furniture in the room. Just to clarify the couches are all light grey. The art above the fireplace is going and we are thinking about putting back the art above the couch to over the fireplace. The couches have royal blue pillows. We would be putting the 2 royal blue chairs on each side of the fireplace.

For those that say put curtains what color do you suggest? wayfair suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Also would mirror or combo of mirrors look good over the couch? or would wall art with blue in it look better?

Another thought, should we do a different colour other than the royal blue. i am willing to try other colors. If so we would get different colored chairs.

I am sorry, but this is not working, in my opinion.

The most important aspect of a room is a floor plan. Get that wrong and it will never work or look good.

The room is already crowded and you are adding more chairs. What is the purpose of this room (what do you use it for?) and how many do you desire to seat at one time?

Suggest using neutral linen or linen like drapes for a softer, more elegant feel. I think the pops of dark blue in chairs, cushions and art is enough.

@CDR thanks for your honesty. This is our formal living room. So only when we have guests do we use it. Our guests could be one couple to like 15 couples at once. Its a pretty large room. I wanted to add the chairs for a pop of colour. I'm definitely no designer which is why I'm seeking out help now. After we painted the room I feel like its off. Hence me trying to make it better now. What do you suggest I do? For reference this is what the room looked like before we painted just last week.

Keep in mind that, beyond 8 feet, one cannot converse with another. Add noise and that distance even decreases.

So, one idea, if you want to make total use of the space, would be to divide the room into 2-3 sections.

From here, the sofas are looking like they are pink or they at least have a pink undertone and are clashing with the paint. If you are keeping the sofas, I would repaint. And if you're keeping all 3 sofas, you don't need anymore furniture in here. It's already crowded and too matchy-matchy. I would get rid of a sofa and add a chair or two. You want to feel as if the room can breathe. Right now, it's not.

It used to be that people would congregate in a living room after dinner to talk.

This rarely happens any more. People tend to want an activity: tv, games.......another reason to be in a room.

This is also a "dead-end" room. One-way in and out.

I know some countries outside the US, it is common for large groups to congregate in one large room, so this may be the norm for you.

So, do your guests actually stay and congregate in this one room? For how long?

Are you set on keeping the existing sofas and 2 large chairs in this room?

What is the width of the room? If you can give your answers in imperial, it would be helpful. If not, I can recalculate. I have 2 clients abroad, so I am getting used to this.

so this room is literally used approximately 6 times a year. most of the time its when extended family visit and I have large family so we split the guests between living room and family room. They will sit and converse for lets say approximately 4-5 hours. Sometimes its used when we have much smaller groups and we will sit in there with our guest for about the same time.

We dont have a TV in there either and don't plan to put one.

We could possibly get rid of one piece of the 3 couches. prefer not to but if it means using the space better we are open to that.

I'm going to attach a sofa that maybe I'd consider adding to replace a piece just to keep the blue in the room. Let me know your thought. Also attaching pics of possible curtains.

@CDR also what do you think about the art numbered 1 to add above the sofa? it comes in different sizes i could possibly add a large one or two of the same ones but smaller sized, next to each other.

I can't tell if it is the computer rendition or actual colors that are off.

From what I can see the undertones and clarity of the sofa and paint colors are clashing.

Adding art or more furniture isn't going to make this better.

If I snip the sofa from the before Picture you posted, manually match the sofa color and superimpose this with the snip and pictures of your space the wall color looks too dingy.

I wouldn't wear these two colors together, so I also wouldn't want them as the two main colors in a living room.

I am thinking that your sofa would look amazing in a navy room, but there are many blue grays, green grays and violet grays that would work much better than the gray you picked.

@Jennifer hogan thank you for that! I see many people here saying the same. my husband literally spent days painting. I know something is off in the room but having a hard time swallowing the fact that the paint and couch colors are clashing. now I'd much rather spend another $200 for paint (and hubby will unfortunately spend another 5 days prepping and painting but we're on lockdown) than to spend so much more replacing furniture. I know this is frist world problems but it truly is causing me stress now.

You don’t need new furniture. Your room is lovely and just needs tweaking. It seems that you are focussing on one decision at a time and suggest you look at lots of inspiration pictures, so you have a direction and then start to adjust. It’s much easier.

What about an elegant creamy white (for curtains also). It’s a blank slate to accessorize around, allowing for more choices with accessories popping vs wall color taking over and boxing you in.

Whether you repaint or not, your walls are such a rich color, I would look at "paintable" outlet plates.

The same company has a complete line - some where you change out the electrical outlet or switch, and some not.

I would not paint until you have decided all items in the room.

@cdr I have added in furniture measurements as requested. I could possibly switch out one piece of the 3 couches. Either a sofa or a loveseat. BUT I would want to incorporate two accent chairs in place at least. preferably the royal blue one I attached earlier.

@Maureen unfortunately hubby doesn't want white. we were thinking Silver Satin and when we sampled it on the walls he was against it. He definitely wants some color on the walls. Doesn't have to be dark but there must be some colour and not white.

@CDR sorry. Room is 13 feet wide. (on one side where the entrance is its 10.5 as there are stairs there.

Both rugs are 6 x 9, but you could vary slightly. C tables and 20x40 coffee table new.

Also floor lamps.

Seats 9 and not crowded. You could actually pull in a couple of extra chairs in the front area, when there are more.

I am sorry, have been busy at work and couldn't get back with you. The new pictures look better, but I am still seeing a disconnect that I think could be corrected using a different gray or a navy, dark purple/blue.

Your sofa appears to be more violet gray than your walls and subtle differences sometimes just feel off - it can be hard to put your finger on the issue.

BM's virtual painter sucks, so the colors used may need to be lightened a shade or two or three to get the same feeling in your home, but it will get you into the color range where you want to be.

I would have never thought of that layout. I'm going to do a mock up and see how I like it. I'm truly loving the idea. So some questions. I'm assuming the 2 rugs would have to be identical. I had my eye on a rug I'm going to attach would love to know your thoughts. As for new coffee table what color do you suggest? Also for wall color you're probably one of the few that seems to think it isn't an issue. Do you really think I can keep it and make it work?

So what are your thoughts on going lighter? Would that look better than going dark? I like Mountain Ridge best from the ones you suggested. I do love the Old Navy as well but not sure I'm brave enough to go that bold. What lighter ones would you suggest?

Paint color: The first photos you showed, the sofas did look a little purple. Second series, they did not. So, I would wait until all the elements are in the room and then make a decision.

Rug: the size, from my calculations should be at least 6 x 9 feet and preferably 8 x 10. (For the love seat area especially, 8 x 10 is preferred if you want some table on one or both ends .

The rug you show appears to have a touch of green in it, so I would stay away from it. Just one more tone to deal with.

You haven't posted a photo of a room you like, so not sure exactly what style you want. I can guess, but not positive.

You can have both rugs the same. Others here will tell you that you should not. But, I think they can be the same OR coordinate. Either is fine.

Coffee Table:

I can't say what kind of coffee table you should buy, as I don't know your design goals. My impression is that you are trying to go more contemporary and that you like a little glam.

Here is what I would do if I were you.

-Get the furniture set in the new arrangement and see how you like the flow. I think you will. It gives people choices and easy in and out.

As for couch color the second series of pics are much more accurate than the first. Couches definitely don't look purple in color. I feel like they're a cool grey.

You have a better eye than me obviously I didnt see the green in the rug. I'm going to send some other rugs I like.

Will also send send you pics of current family room for sense of my style. I do however want the living room to have a grander feel if you known what I mean.

I haven't played around with furniture placement but will do so within next couple of days hubby has been busy and I need his help moving the furniture around so I don't end up scratching the floors.

Oh... what rug had green in it? I looked and didn't see, and don't remember it. I saw somewhere a photo and they showed it with yellow-green chair, but muted. ...there are colors a bit unusual / quirky for me: lemongrass.... etc.

Don't need hubby to move furniture. I can move any piece myself. Put these on the feet of all furniture. Prevents scratches and makes furniture easy to slide.
