Great idea! Get black rod to go from wall to wall. You should have enough room to stack sheers on both sides of each window. Especially if they are on rings, Smith and Noble has a great assortment of Roman Shades out of natural materials that can be customized. There are probably many other vendors on line who will do custom shades. I'd check Ikea for sheers.

What width do you recommend to fall within the 9 inches?

Not a hopeless case! With sheers you can really fudge things and 9” is plenty. I had basically NO room for a stack in my master and was able to add full looking sheers. And because they’re sheer, even if you cover a bit of the window, tons of light still comes through. Here’s the window showing virtually no room for a stack...

I would order several sets of sheers and use them one by one until you get the look you like. Take or send back the ones you don't use. Make sure they are hung barely above the floor when you put them up. Some brands may be better than others at having panels be the same length.

Drapes on either side will cover about half the window; what about just using Roman blinds.
