Kids Rooms What Next?

I’m wanting to add to both my 11 year old son’s room and my 8 year old daughter’s room.

Both I’m hoping to get a dresser that is good quality that will last through their teen years and goes with their beds etc.

Boy room really all of it can change except for bed, side table and window coverings.

Girl room, pretty much only wanting to change dresser

And just wanted to add that when we get tie new stuff I will be putting up art/photos and taking down outrageous decals currently up!

Here is a lay out for each room too. Bedroom 1 is the girl room, two we aren’t discussing, 3 is boy room.

Do you have an artisan furniture market in your area? we used our local artisan market for our master bedroom dresser. I found an old Drexel dresser on Craigslist for $50, and had one of the refinishers take it, fix it up, paint it a beautiful deep blue (our bedroom is coastal), and add new hardware. it's gorgeous, goes with our theme, and is completely unique. plus we got all the details of high end furniture (dovetailed drawers, solid wood) for less than a comparable new dresser would have been. when we're ready for a new sideboard, and our ikea dresser in our kids room is ready to go, I'll be looking at the artisan market again. even if you don't have something similar, there will be furniture refinishers in your area.

We aren’t after a DIY type this go round. Doing the bed was enough!

We just got ikea tall hemnes dressers for two of our kids rooms and they are not very expensive but the design is extremely practical. It is ikea but I don't see why it shouldn't last through their teen years (and they were pretty cheap so if we have to get new dressers down the road then we will and I won't feel guilty about it)

I would love to say Hemnes and done but so far daughter says no. I’m trying to see if it’s the knobs as we can easily change that!

Our dressers are attached to the walls :) We got the black for one of my boys and kept the knobs but we changed the knobs on the white one we got for one of our girls

I can take a picture of the white one with nickel knobs if that would be helpful. Just let me know

All good I think we are making progress! I’ll update on a bit

I like huge cork boards in kids rooms that allow them to add and subtract the stuff they love over time with no damage to the walls. I also like neutral wall color to save painting every time the fave color of the year is chosen especially with girls. From what I see your son does not need the desk so that is a perfect spot for a nice wide dresser and then the tall one can find another home . You need to have a much thicker mattress for his bed to make the headboard look right. Then you need his info as to what he wants the cork board for and make one big enough to handle posters if that is his choice. He needs a proper night table and a lamp for sure. The girls room is another story she obviously needs storage and probably now a good time to purge stuff she no longer plays with .Is teal her fave color? I really dislike the bedding it looks like old ladies stuff, maybe take her to pick out the bedding and don’t be surprised if teal is not the color of the year, Same size corkboard for her get her to help with all the choices I happen to like wide lower dressers in kids rooms to allow some stuff to go on top.As for the clothing IMO get closet organizers for the girl for sure as she ages there will be more and more clothing that needs hanging space .I have found that kids really don’t use a desk except maybe for crafts so make sure that is something being needed.

First thing that comes to mind for me is to remove the wall to wall carpet in the children's bedroom . Unless they are super clean and someone cleans the rug with special cleaners every day ..it collects dust , crumbs and other allergens that could be a health problem and cause asthma . Besides when they open the window and pollen comes in that too will settle in the rug ..or if they spill something or if you are in a high moisture area ...it could produce mold in the rug ...children's rooms should be easily cleaned of all kinds of bugs , mites, fungus ...hmm, besides that I would make the rooms brighter more cheerful ...paint the furniture white and get storage shelves ...and easy low dressers maybe a bench or a rocking chair and a lamp in a corner for reading .....

I notice your son is in the bedroom with the en suite. If you’re thinking long term, you may want to switch rooms now. Your daughter will most likely appreciate and use an attached bathroom more than your son (if my own experience with 3 daughters and 1 son is any indication!). This would also provide a great opportunity to go through things and pare down.

    Thanks everyone!

For the desk I know he doesn’t need it but he loves it. The heat register is actually below the desk so I’m hesitant to put a large dresser there. We actually had a really good talk and he chose three pictures he wants me to frame and put up. So we will get that organized and maybe do some switching around to make it happen.

I really like the cork board idea and my daughter has one in her room but son does not. That would be a great addition.

Both kids have huge closets with double hanging areas and tons of storage. They have closet organizers in them.

The boy gets his own room as we actually have two girls. They share the bathroom in the hallway.

Would this dresser, with night stand, work in my daughter's room? I had originally thought white, keep is simple with hemnes and change the pulls, now I'm wondering if adding some wood would look nice?

@Patricia Colwell Consulting she chose the bedding. It is her favourite.

I don’t think that wood works well with the teal. It is really nice but seems to clash. And then you have the white desk and bright bedding. Seems like it would be hard to pull it all together. But I do like the bold look she chose with the bedding and the bed so hopefully you keep us posted on how it all comes out.

If there’s a ReStore in your area, you might want to check it out. Furniture can be in a range of varying conditions, but older dressers and bureaus can be more solid than newer pieces. The purchase of a ReStore item benefits Habitat for Humanity.

Okay passing on the maple wood. It’s not quite right. My eight year old has okayed the Hemnes so we will go that route. And get some cute new knobs

I also ordered a few prints my son chose of his favourite book titles.

Today I’m going to reorganizing and declutter both their rooms. They are complete pack rats so that doesn’t help!

Lots of progress on clean up today and we swapped the bedspread to another one for a bit. Need to get the dresser but now feels like we can as clutter is gone! One room down one to go

    Update with new dresser

    Love the white!

Your son is 11 and starting to grow. He will need a standard box spring and mattress to get his bed up off the floor to chair height. I would suggest an extra-long twin for him to grow into. I can’t tell if his platform is long enough for a x-long. You may need to buy a new bed frame. He needs a dresser....I prefer a 6-drawer wide dresser (3+3) rather than a vertical dresser. Let him select his comforter and go from there with the rest.

He has a comforter that he selected. Sadly he’s the one against the box spring. We originally had one. I’m on the hunt for a low profile one to meet him in middle. He doesn’t want to get rid of the desk and likes the dresser he has. Also has a large closet with built ins. I replaced the knobs on his dresser yesterday.

He’s selected three prints of his favourite book series and I’m going to get them framed on same sized frames and hang and add a cork board and call it a day. We did a massive clean up and got rid of tons of Stuff too

My main suggestions were going to be new bed linens for the girl’s bed and IKEA Hemnes white stain 8-drawer dresser (this would have been better if you want it to go through teen years). But I see you did take care of that and the clutter. The paint color in both rooms is depressing. The rooms need something fun like large poster wall art.

Thanks for your opinion but we are completely happy with the paint colour. As I said in the boys room we have three large prints, of his choosing coming, and in the girls room these are the pieces she chose. There are lots of pops of colour in both spaces and they love ghost bedding.

She also has a large closet with multiple hanging options which will serve her well in teen years. My teenage daughter, in another room, has a small dresser too and most of her things are hung in the closet or folded on the many shelves in there.

For the boy’s room the Hemnes dresser comes in a gray that would match the curtains but I would lose the duvet cover you don’t want too much gray and black, bright color would be fun. How about a fun inexpensive armchair in a bright color? IKEA used to have some fun ones but I don’t see any currently.

As I said I just got him new dresser pulls and he wants to keep the desk. He has two duvets he loves. The grey/blue one and a mine craft block green one. I would consider getting him a desk chair in a bright colour.

And here is my son’s room done. He loves it. I love it. Exactly what he wants for now.

    Looks great!

This is all kids need, it doesn't to be so fancy, in a year or two they'll want something else :)
