Exposing a dry walled over fireplace

We have a house built in 1946 with a chimney that indicates a dry walled over fireplace. Id like to expose it but I’m quite confused. The floors are original pine flooring so It doesn’t look like there was ever a hearth. It also seems the baseboard is original to the house and doesn’t look patched at all. I’m wondering if it could have been a chimney for a wood burning stove? But if that is the case, would the chimney still have a fire box?

just want to start sawing into the wall but wanted to see what I was getting myself into first.

thanks in advance!
