Where do I start.....

My bedroom has been a thorn in my side for the last 3 years. the massive walls and scale are overwhelming. I am just stuck on how to make this homey and inviting. right now I just want to escape to another party of my home.

This is so fun!!! Love this space!! The jest thing I would do is replace the light. Something big. Something round. Something wow!! I would also replace the bed frame. Either stay with the same wood tones. Or avoid wood. As well as for the dresser and side tables. The rugs are pretty. And so is the bedding. Do you like the wood everywhere? Or is that bothering you? Do you want to tone some of it down? And what’s upstairs?? So cool!!

Omg I love this! I just have one word... PLANTS! Plants all along the ledges and some vines hanging down. Also, get some larger pictures or create a collage of family pics and definitely put a longer one above your bed. I would also put a bench or a little dresser under your board where the lights are. Ugh those sky lights! What a dream!

What about big fluffy sheepskin rugs on each side of the bed on top of existing rug? Costco has a “quad” rug, made from skins of four sheep sewn together. What about different table lamps on the nightstands that are more industrial style? Your white lamps are blending into the walls. Think about other things that make a bedroom feel cozy such as a faux fur throw blanket tossed over a corner of bed or bench and some faux fur pillows. Move black chalkboard and round mirror to another space. Look for some large inexpensive art pieces to bring in some character. And plants like someone else suggested. If budget allows, you might look for an upholstered headboard and footboard in a plush fabric, perhaps with nail heads.

A tall plant real or fake, to the right of the bed. Change out the plain white lampshades to something that ties in with the colors of the rug or dark throw pillow.

And if possible replace the black box on the shelf with something inviting and colorful (Ex. A potted plant, a statue).

How about extending that loft over the bedroom space also!

What colors make you feel warm and cozy? Stark white walls, bedding and dark woods are very cool looks.
I would start with bedding, take color from bedding to introduce contrast on the wall where your headboard is placed. Pick up more color in artwork and a pair of comfy chairs with table and reading lamp.

There is nothing personal in the room. Looking at the room, we have no clues as to the things you love, the people important to you, the places you’ve been. Your bedroom is the most private, personal place in your house, seldom or never seen by guests, so decorating to please them is really unnecessary. Do you travel? Large, framed photos taken when you visited Yosemite, Carlsbad, Great Smoky parks-or maybe photos of the B and B in the Cotswolds, the view from Capri, the pied a terre in Paris? What makes you smile when you wake up? Are you drawn to original artwork you saw in a gallery in Jackson Hole or Key West or LA? Treat yourself. Think about a big cozy upholstered chair or two with a round table for a lamp and a place to set wine glasses or coffee cups while you finish those last minute emails.

Plants! And I'd replace that black, boxy artwork between the wall sconces with a large landscape art of some sort. Be it abstract or realixtic. Bring in some organic "outdoor" images or elements. Make them BIG. The queen(?) size bed looks small for the space.

The room shouts for big and bold elements. An amazing chandelier, Tall stately plants in at least two of the corners, trailing plants along one of those ledges. This space feels like a luxurious hospital room. Few organic elements. Bring the outdoors in.

A loveseat or big comfy chair with a side table, placed outside the bathroom doorway. There's room to subdivide the space visually into the bed/sleeping and a sitting/reading area. There are so many things you can do without commiting to getting a contractor.

I would do something with the bed wall to make that entire space below the trim a feature. Wallpaper, probably. Are there no windows in the space? You need some plants, and some art to personalize the space. Good start though!

Seems like painting at the walls a color would warm it up some. I agree with the others that it is a pretty cool space. Is there room for a sitting area? I like that you anchor the room with a dark carpet. Big art for the walls. Since the rug is black, maybe switch out the other black things in the room for something more colorful. I guess what I’m getting to - add color.

The wood tones of the bed, nightstands and dresser don’t work with the tones of the wood floors, doors and trim. I would suggest changing the bed to a neutral fabric headboard. The nightstands and dresser could be black. Good luck!

I think there are 3 major issues.

    1. The eye has to be drawn down and room made to feel more intimate and cozy. This can be done behind bed - Wallpaper (fake brick is one idea), dark wall with or without a collage, or a mural.

    2. Bedroom set is not the right style and you also need more height and volume. If budget permits, try selling your set on Marketplace and put money towards your purchase.

    3. Adding a small sitting area would help make room feel cozier and help fill the void feeling.

Of course, accessorizing helps to personalize a room and art always helps.

Without knowing your taste, vision or budget, hope some of these ideas help.

Woah, what a cool space! I can see how it could feel like you're rattling around in it though. Fabric and art will be your friend! I'm not a pro, but here's what I'd do:

--Paint the wooden rail that goes around the middle of the room white, at the very least on the bed side of the room. I'd probably also paint the baseboards and door, but that's just me.

--Paint the nook the bed sits in a dark, warm color. Search for "moody bedroom paint colors" if you're looking for inspo.

--Ditch the bed, which is very heavy and formal for the space, and do a fabric headboard, either the size of your bed or consider a built-in headboard that spans the entire wall. Something like the one pictured (but have it go up higher). Maureen posted a couple of examples of upholstered headboards. You can also buy upholstered panels.

--Get rid of the down-facing spotlights over the bed, which make you feel like you're on display. You could probably pull down the electrical from those to hardwire a couple of really beautiful sconces to break up and warm up that wall.

--Swap the bench at the foot of your bed, which is too small, for a low couch. I'm including a couple of examples, including the airy and bright direction I'd go and a more traditional look that includes the upholstered headboard in a space with a tray ceiling not totally unlike yours.

--Move the dresser that's under the TV over to the wall that's to the left of the bathroom entrance. I'd actually consider replacing or painting that heavy furniture, but if you're not willing to do that, moving it would weight down that corner instead of cluttering up the wall with your features--the archway and the staircase. The TV might look odd floating there by itself so I'd put something that's lighter visually there, like maybe a narrow console table that won't jut out into the stairway path. You could even add an ottoman or pouf or two underneath to add some additional fabric and then pull those out to use as footstools when watching TV.

--Get rid of the wall sconces flanking the chalkboard, unless you're planning to put a large piece of furniture under them. They don't connect to anything.

--Pull the rugs down toward the bathroom wall. Yes, ideally you'd have them run all the way under the nightstands but they're too scrunched up (you can even see where the corner shelf is getting in your way) and it's tipping the room off-center.

This seems like a lot but you can do it slowly over time and hopefully fall in love with your room!

Edited to add: I just snooped on your Houzz idea book and you have a picture there that shows you are headed in entirely the right direction! Trust your gut. I think the dark wall would work, love the art, but would do a soft headboard rather than introducing more wood. Love the idea of two pendants hanging down from the tray/shelf rather than those spotlights.

I agree with others who have said that the style of furniture and wood colors in the furniture aren't working with what's there. While the wood that is built in around the room is not my favorite it seems to me like that is part of the character of the entire house. Be intentional if you decide to get rid of any of it so that you keep the character of the house as a whole (that doesn't mean that you shouldn't get rid of any of it, just do it carefully). I also like the idea of moving the dresser to the side and or making a sitting area in there. Right now it seems like the bed is swimming in a great abyss and it would be good to break up the space with some more furniture. I'm excited to see what you do here, it is a great space!
