It appears to be a leather imitation plastic laminate. If it's still stuck well, you can laminate right over it.

We work with alot of customers in remodeling their homes and we've used countertops just like it and it's called a leathered granite countertop. Here's a picture of one of our recent remodels using the same type of countertop. Hope that was helpful.
