Help With Curtain Panel Width, Please.

last modified: 5 years ago

I’m having curtain panels altered to fit a group of three living room windows, similar to bay windows. . On each end the wall turns. Guessing the panels will go beyond the turn. I couldn’t get a good pic, but where the shadow ends, that’s where it turns the corner. Any idea how wide those end panels should be?

p.s to my GW friends who visited last year...yep, those are the same curtains I pestered you with for opinions.🙃 The wall width between windows is 14” I’d like to retain as much view as is feasible. I’m a drape dummy, and really appreciate your input.

I didn't see the named curtains in situ, but I would think in this case you'd want less fullness because the wall can't accommodate it. My rule is for thicker curtains, I typically use less fullness. The more sheer, the fuller I go.

What size are the panels now and what kind of heading do they have? You need one width or one panel. Anything less will look too skimpy.

My mother always said a curtain should be 2 1/2 times the area it is covering. That may not work in your case with what you are doing. I understand your constraints, but you do not want the curtain to look skimpy either.

Shadylady, and bbstx, the panels are far wider than I can use, so will be altered . They are silk, lined and inner -lined. I call them ‘ball gowns” 😂. They’re very full, so think I can get by with 1 1/2 times width of windows? Question being, should They be wider on the ends as

It turns the corner? The brass tray would have to go, and the mirror on the other side. Between the windows is only 14” of wall. Really appreciate the help as I’m at a loss. My friend is altering them for me and don’t want the burden of this decision on her.

So I'm not 100% sure what your plan is. Are you just wanting to put them on the end of the outer windows and go around the bend with them? This is not right. They should end where the bend starts and there should be one in between each window also. Having one at each end only going around the bend and none between, will look very unbalanced. Again, not sure what you're wanting to do.

Your situation is a bit different than the pic with the pale yellow curtains. Shadyladys plan sounds right. As to how much fullness maybe you can play with them to see how much fabric will fit into the desired stack back space.

Think I’ve ( finally 🙄) figured out my query: how far should the rod , and panel , go past end of window.? There’s 9” till wall curves. Should it go over to the mirror wall? If not,

then the panel must be rather narrow...right?

In your situation a rod would not typically turn the corner since there's no window there. Yeah you don't have much space for your pretty ballgowns. this the only place to put those drapes?

So this is just my suggestion. I would put one panel next to each window, each the same size. Since you have pleated curtains, the width should be about 25 or 30" each. If you have these already and someone is cutting them down, it may be different. Measure each pleat first to see what you'll end up with. If I were making from scratch, I'd make five 5" or 6" pleats. As long as you end up with the same amount of pleats on each panel, they should all be the same size. I would not make the end panels wider to go around the bend. If the total space between each window is 14", you can just put one panel between each window and one at each end. I wouldn't make them any smaller. They should cover a little bit of the glass and you can scrunch them a bit if you have to.

Your first inspiration pic I believe actually has five windows. I might be wrong but I don't think so. The wall space next to each window is about the same. So I would stop the end panels at the bend and not go around it. This way each panel will be the same size and the whole area will look balanced.

The pleat pic you show are inverted pleats. If these are your curtains, I'd leave them be with the five pleats.

You are so very kind to take Your time with me. Time is the most unselfish gift of all. Yes, those are the curtains...here’s a pic of back side. Panels between each window was my intention.. It was the 9“

space at each end that puzzled me. Think you’ve made it clear what to do. Thank you again’t!!!!!♥️ I will post the finished pic, but it may be awhile.

You're welcome! : ) I'm thinking since the wall spaces at the end are a bit smaller, you could probably go slightly around the bend (just the extra 5") assuming you're using one long rod with elbows. It's a bit of a difficult situation, but I don't think cutting the end panels down smaller will look nice.
