Shower Accent Tile

last modified: 4 years ago

Hi, looking for some advice.I am converting a tub to a stand up shower. I will be using 12x24 wave white matter tile in the shower and glass pebble down the center of the shower from the ceiling, through the niche and onto the shower floor. I am using white grout for the white tile but am thinking of using mint grout for the floor and accent tile or just use white. The look is completely different. Please let me know your thoughts.

12x12 niche will be very small once it's all tiled. but if you don't have a lot of stuff, it will be fine.

I'd have to see the room. the size, the vanity, how it relates to the shower, etc.

are you talking something like this?

Your tile guy is going to hate you. I tiled my entire wall w/glass mosaic tiles. by myself! what a nightmare. And they were all on paper mounted sheets. I had to wet all of them and carefully peel. then came the grouting. such fun.

well, if you're looking for glass tile, there are better options than floor and decor.

Oceanside tile, Sonoma tile, Encore ceramics, I believe the brand I used above was Walker Zanger, the Mizu line.

but oceanside has gorgeous options. If you want to do an entire wall in the shower, I'd pick something from here, or Encore. (not the cheapest option, but man, it will look amazing w/the wavy tile)

that floor and decor tile is ok for a cheaper redo, in a beach condo. But if you're doing a vacation home, then upgrade it w/the look of the tile!

Beautiful - unfortunately given that it need sro be done by next week I don't have many options now. What about the idea of running the wave tile vertically instead of horizontally and keeping the glass accent from the ceiling through the niche and to the floor? Or is that not good?

did you see the black shower in my comment above my last one? I edited it and added it. man, it's handsome!

can you post a pic of the bathroom so I can see the layout?

This is the floor tile in the bathroom - not sure if I should lay straight or brick pattern.

how flat are the tiles? sandwich two of them back to back and front to front. Any gaps in the middles? bowing?

usually for that format, it's no more than a 1/3rd offset. (and at least 95% coverage on the back of the tile. don't let the tile guy do a "spot method' install w/the mortar)

if they're flat enough, I'd do a stack (or straight)

Don't have a pic. This is a quick drawing of it.

Here is another pic of the tiles for the floor and the specs.

I'm telling him to use the light tiles in the boxes only.

in your pic, that's a 50/50 offset. usually a no-no for that size. if you go to the install specs heading it will tell you the layout orientation you should use.

    (I like the tiles)

Did you sandwich them like I asked you to do? front and back?

I like this one w/that size.

this is a proper 1/3 layout.

    I am

not at the residence so cant do that. Pictures online show brick pattern and regular straight pattern. It's a thin tile, rectified edge. Also attached is the actual wavy tile I have. Slightly different from the others you posted

very difficult to get photos to load. typical houzz

your tile manufacturer will have the recommended layout option under their install heading

anyway, before he grouts, you should be able to slide a quarter across the tile and not have it get hung up on any tile lippage

these are recommenced 1/3 loft-set layouts

(and make sure tile guy doesn't do the 'spot method w/the mortar)

Did you see my wall wavy tile I uploaded? Also can you comment on if it's ok to lay them vertical? And keep the accent glass on the wall through the niche?

  • PRO

I suppose you could run the pattern vertical. why not? and yes, you could do the glass on one wall.

once you have all the tile do a dry layout on the floor to see how it looks

Alex Ranieri thanked Beth H. :

If I run it vertical, I would leave the accent glass tile (vertical run) celing through niche and showed floor. Or if I do it horrizontal run not to interrupt the pattern as you suggested then I would just do the wall with the shower fixture in glass and the floor in glass. What to you prefer?

yeah, it's not too late to redo the niche. once it's tiled, it will be more like 10x10. too small.

and it's no where near finished, so he can redo it

before he tiles, it should be taped and mortared like this, and then waterproofed w/something like Redgard. Ditto the wall boards.

I don't know who is doing this or what kind of waterproofing they plan on doing, but make sure you take daily progress pictures.

wondering why that shower floor isn't done first. How are they going to do the sides above the floor? PVC liner, or??

They had to break up concrete and wait for the plumber to move some pipes so they stated on the walls while waiting for the plumber to finish. They would be doing the floor today.

I think I'm just going to run it like this. They are not super wavy tiles as you can see

Thank you Beth for your help! One last question - I wanted to add a backsplash behind the floating vanity. Should it be the white wavy tile or the accent blue glass tile or something completely different?

  • PRO

how big will the space you want to tile be? what's the vanity look like? it just depends. (normally though, unless you're doing an entire large wall, the smaller tile behind the vanity is usually best. if you want to do the whole wall that connects to the shower, then you could do the wavy tile)

why not wait until everything is installed and come back and post a pic? you can always add the backsplash last

Shower next to vanity wall. Shower wall is not flush with vanity wall. Will also add pic of vanity.

This is the vanity in white with a solid surface integrated sink in white

since it jogs, the wavy pattern will be broken, and that wall isn't that large.

do a Schluter Jolly to edge the wavy tile on the outside edge, and perhaps do the glass tile above the vanity. I don't know. I'd have to see everything installed and what you're going to use.

are you using the blue/white glass tile? I don't know if I'd like that on the wall. Up to you though, it's your bathroom!

I'd wait until things start progressing.

Hi - yes, definitely going to use the metal edge on the outside tile. I am using that blue glass tile as an accent in the shower. Just not sure about grout color. Let me know your thoughts.

Grout changes the look. Let me know

Alex, happened to find a pic of a similar wall like you have. see where it jogs back next to the shower?

thought it might give you an idea

Alex Ranieri thanked Beth H. :

Yes - that is exactly how it is only the the shower fixtures are ok the other wall. I guess adding the same shower tile on the jog part isn't a bad idea especially if i end up using a backsplash. Here is today's picture. I am really stuck on the grout color to use. It will change the look of the glass tile completely. Obviously with the white wavy tile it will be white grout, but I can't picture using a different color grout on the glass tile for some reason.. also I am worried about using white grout on the glass floor (dirt)

  • PRO

not a big diff between the white or the mint.

I'd use Mapei flexcolor CQ for the floors. you don't even have to seal it and it is stain resistant.

just make sure the person grouting knows how to use this type. (small sections at a time, and clean up quickly with very little water on the sponge. most grouts let you smear the grout on the entire floor and then go back 30 mins to wipe it clean. you can't do that w/this grout or it leaves a residue that takes forever to remove)

since it's on the floor, you could do a diff color. what if you did the slate, pearl gray, waterfall or Silver?

I see a Mint on this one too.

    jade green? space blue?

Alex Ranieri thanked Beth H. :

Thank you for this. What color grout so you recommend for the wavy white tile and I guess the glass as well. I have attached the mapai color chart.

We were thinking the same thing of uploding the chart. Sorry, I mean the grout for the shower tile (white wavy) and glass accent ad glass shower floor.

  • PRO

I'd stick w/white for the wavy tile. you don't want to visually interrupt the design.

Avalanche is the whitest of the white grouts.

Alex Ranieri thanked Beth H. :

Should I use the same Avalanche for the blue glass tile?

  • PRO

alex, if you want! you either want white for the glass, or you want the blue or the mint.

it's fine to mix grout if one is for the floor and one is for the walls.

    doesn't really make a diff.

do a sample board w/the diff grouts and left over tile and see what you like

Alex Ranieri thanked Beth H. :

Great idea worjtrhr sample board! The only thing throwing me off is that the strip going from the ceiling through the niche and to the shower floor will be of the blue pebble and not sure how a different grout color would look up against the white wavy tile with white grout.

  • PRO

oh, I see what you mean. Yeah, try the sample board. take some of the spare pieces of the wavy, and some spares of the glass and do a tiny similar layout. this way you can see how the diff grout colors will look next to it. you only need a few tablespoons of each grout color.

(you could always buy a bag to sample and return it for an exchange. )

brick pattern w/what? what tile is going outside on the floor?

i wish they would have staggered your glass tile sheets so as not to get the grid lines. hopefully grout will hide it.

Didn't see this message till now. You are right, they should have staggered them

This is the new cabana bath/laundry. I removed the wall that was between the new vanity and washer/dryer. I will be placing 60 inch cabinet above washer and dryer and then a waterfall counter over the washer/dryer. I was then thinking to glass tile the entire wall above the washer dryer and vanity above and below. Thoughts?

  • PRO

Alex, the shower came out very nice. You didn't see my stagger recommendation??? damn. You shower floor is exactly the reason why I warn people when they use these mosaic sheets. the grid pattern is very noticeable. I'd prob have them fix that

Yes - totally missed your recommendation.. didn't see that till after. I will see if they can tear it up .

they may be able to just remove some of the pieces around the grid marks and hand place them so that it loos more random.

and inform the tiler that if he staggers and hand places individual pieces at the sheet borders, he won't get the grid look. I mean, this is tiling 101.

I like the idea of some color and glass tile.

have you thought about a diff color on the walls though? that gray is rather depressing in there.

If you're doing a white waterfall, I think tiling the entire wall would be fine.

what kind of glass tile? wouldn't hurt to get some pattern in there.

maybe some wood shelves, or art, it's very 'cold'.

Could be a great space though

I like the addition of large area rug. textured one above, or something w/some color and pattern in it. and the wood shelves in there are mandatory w/all this white

    design/pattern tile

I also like the wood butcher block idea

see how this warm wood instantly warms up the whites/grays?

    love this one

this too...notice the wood and basket accessories. the tile is a blue gray.

The flooring will be a light Beachwood look, wide plank Luxury vinyl. Above the washer and dryer will be two 30 inch side by side cabinets with high gloss white doors. I am thinking of a quartz counter with waterfall or possibly just using the same gloss panels as the cabinet doors and run it along the side of the dryer to match the upper panel on the cabinets. I was going to use the same glass tile as the other bathroom with the mint grout but after the issue with the grout lines I have since changed my mind and am open to new ideas. The entire home is painted in that lights grey. I would go back to white if it was all up to me. Open to your opinion on the counter and tile

honestly, the sky's the limit. I added a bunch of other pics to my comment. do you like any of those?

to me, an all white/gray laundry room looks like I need to wear a jacket to work in there! but that's just me.

I'd do some type of pattern (like big art or maybe a wall treatment ) maybe some color, pattern tiles....

since you like modern, what about a cool geometric tile w/a bit of color to it? you don't have a huge space to tile, so something like that would add the perfect amount of interest without killing the budget

black glass pennies and black grout. w/a white countertop, i think it would look cool

I actually love the look of this. (it comes in other colors) what do do you think about a charcoal quartz for the counter?

or, if you really want the white, then do something w/a little texture. Tilebar. Nabi Harlequin

I was thinking something fresh..there is a door to that cabana bathroom that walks out to the pool deck.. it's a vacation home in Florida and would like to keep it fresh :) love the black tile, but I don't think it would be for this particular home.. I loved the circles by encore but they are $75 per sware foot.

the pennies come in all colors, all materials, and all prices.

this is a fla color. has a iridescent sheen to them (yes these also need to be staggered!)

or try these w/the ice blue grout color (on the left)

tons of other places have the cool bubble tile sheets. not expensive

i'm digging this color w/your bathroom. you could do a blue gray quartz, or even the charcoal or white quartz, and I'd paint the walls this light, icy blue color. (SW Misty, BM Smoke)

get some cool art for the wall and some walnut shelves for over the toilet. I'd still bring in the jute rug for texture

Or, what about these? (make sure to use WHITE mortar thinset and white grout. and offset and hand place!)

Iridescent Pebble Glass Mosaic, Clear White · More Info

paint the walls one of these colors. would be amazing w/the white quartz top and cabinets

I actually love the bottom two. wall and trim color. w/this tile, and the quartz, flooring,,,be perfect.

With the whites and modern feel you like, I really like this glass tile for the entire wall. the other walls would match w/the current gray color, but I like the grayish mauve tones of the other two a lot better.

or maybe just do the other 3 walls in the Raindrops color.

    this color would work too.
