Help Me Find a Smaller Range with Double Oven?

5 years ago

Hi All,

I would appreciate your expert help--I am afraid that I am looking for something that doesn't exist. I am building a new kitchen in SF where space is tight. My "dream kitchen" probably doesn't have the square footage of many suburban american kitchens. I would really like a 5 or 6 burner gas range with double ovens underneath--a large gas oven and a smaller electric oven. I cook more than I bake, which is why I don't want the standard dual range with electric only ovens below--I would like gas for roasting meat and veggies. I would also like something gorgeous, with color enamel options.
I would like to avoid a 48" range because it will take up a lot of our counter space and 8 burners seems like overkill for a family of 3.

I thought the Lacanche Bussy or Beaune would be perfect, but the reviews are scaring me off! I'm find spending a lot of money on something well made that will last forever, but I don't want to spend like that on something that won't work! After that, nothing seems to check all of the boxes. I have looked at the Hallman/ILVE, and Cafe, but they don't seem to have the electric and gas ovens. Same with Verona. Bluestar seems to only have double ovens when you go up to 48". I found a Steele Cucine Ascot from Italy, but can't seem to find it for sale in the US, let alone servicing for it. Anything I am missing? Any ideas?

Thanks!

    We have a Lacanche Cluny 1400 and I cannot say enough great things about the company and the range itself. I’m not sure what reviews you are reading, but if you use the search tool and read all the comments and threads about Lacanche, I’m sure you’ll find the opposite.

    Have you searched the ABT web site. They seem to carry "everything". As to on-line reviews, remember that people are much more likely to submit a negative review if they are unhappy than a positive one if they are happy.

    People here really, really love their Lacanche ranges, check the threads and you’ll see. I nearly got one myself, but couldn’t overcome the seduction of a LaCornue. The Lacanche reps are very active on this board and are really helpful and friendly, I think that speaks volumes about the quality of their product. If you like it (and they are beauties), go for it! It seems like it fits your needs.

    Thanks. Yes, I looked at the Cornufe, which is gorgeous, but it seems that it is only available with both ovens being electric, is that right?

    That’s correct. When you get into the LaCornue chateau series, you have much more flexibility, but they are quite pricey. The Lacanche gives you more choices than the Cornufe at roughly the same price point.

    In exactly the same spot. Double ovens would really be helpful but I just have 36" to fit a range. In our previous home we had a Cluny 1400 and loved it, but we've down-sized and our existing 36" with just one large oven isn't efficient for us. Thinking of the Beaune/Bussy Lacanche models but know the electric/convection vertical oven is smaller due to the convection fans and wondering if this size Lacanche can handle dinners for 12 - 14 people on an occasional basis. Thinking electric/convection with gas for the larger oven. Anyone have experience cooking and baking on this model Lacanche??

    @Nancy B,

    If it's any indication, I know of at least one of our Lacanche owners in Canada who cooks on her 36" Beaune for a family of 8 on a daily basis, so I'm sure 12-14 people occasionally won't be a problem! The vertical oven might not be as deep as the gas oven for example, but the convection fan gives you the option of cooking on several levels at the same time to compensate.

    @jmhd,

    As noted above, most Lacanche owners on this forum and "in real life" are extremely happy with their range. Most of the time, complaints could (and should) be addressed with a service call and minor adjustments to the burners, oven temperature, etc. I always tell our clients to call us as soon as they think that something might not be quite right, as it's much easier to take care of it right away than get annoyed about something that can easily be fixed.

    In terms of "lasting forever", it's not unusual to find 20+ year-old Lacanche that have been and are still being used on a daily basis with minimal maintenance, so it will certainly outlast most other ranges out there.

    I hope this helps,

    Patrick

    That's good information. I think the 36" Beaune/Bussy will work.

    Thanks, Patrick! I appreciate your help and input.

    Concerning the 36" Beaune/Bussy, does anyone know if the vertical electric oven can be used both as convection or as a regular electric oven? Is there a toggle switch to turn the convection feature on/off?

    Just get a 30” double oven range like the Cafe. Much more usable space.

    I'm familiar with the Cafe line but not really a fan. Plus, I have 36" space to fill!

    We love our Lacanche! We've had our Cluny 1400 since 2015, and we couldn't be more pleased with the quality of the range; it's a workhorse. It's also extremely beautiful and a true statement piece in our kitchen. I loved working with the Art Culinary team, they extremely helpful, friendly and very professional.. I'm not sure what reviews you are reading, but on this site and the old Gardenweb, there are threads that go back years and years with owners coming to share their advice and give positive reviews many who have owned their Lacanche for years.

    @Nancy B, have you been in contact with the sales team at Lacanche? They can answer these questions. My warming cabinet is not a convection baker, so I can’t answer the question about a toggle switch. But if you reach out to Lacanche directly, their sales team, I think it’s Eleanor in NYC, they can help you with your questions and ordering. Let us know what you get!

    @Nancy B,

    The vertical oven can indeed be used in "static" or "convection" mode, the toggle switch is right next to the temperature knob.

    I hope this helps,
