Do you like kitchen islands?

We are curious to know if you prefer a kitchen island or not. For some kitchen islands provide extra space to store kitchen essentials and a place to sit. For others it too bulky and takes up a considerable amount of space. What is your preference?

I like the way islands look but would not spend tons of money to renovate my kitchen to have one.

This is a discussion forum. If you post your layout and other pictures, people here can help you improve your dated kitchen, Gray is out, so are barn doors.

The OP Pearl Remodeling does not mention that this decision about an island depends on the size of the kitchen. We frequently see bad and misguided kitchen designs on this forum where the homeowner, designer, or a renovation contractor like the OP squeezes in an island with no thought to island clearances, or whether the island is too big for available counter slabs, or for easy cleaning. Since the OP does not mention kitchen size, only “preferences”, I assume the OP does not understand these kitchen design principles.

Pearl Remodeling is a remodeling company in California. It appears to me, this is truly a query by the company. I doubt they’re seeking advice as to layout, etc.

I believe that sushipup's comment was disingenuous. And, at least for me, laugh-out-loud funny.

But...it depends on the kitchen. Islands take the place of the missing wall in an open floor plan kitchen, and are almost a necessity. In an enclosed kitchen they often don't make sense, unless the space is huge.

Oh Lordy....the OP only asked the question of whether you liked kitchen islands or not. Did not say the photo is of a kitchen that they are redoing. It's just an example of an island.

I do not like islands. They get in the way mostly. I'd rather have a table in the kitchen. More comfortable for sitting and prepping food (I do not stand to do that...arthritis) and waiting on food to be ready and for having a cup of coffee or glass of wine with a friend.

People don't read the question in full and rush to judgement. It is obviously just a question to find out what people like. I love an island because I hate corner cabinets.

I love my island. It's where most of the prep work takes place in my kitchen. DH and I can be at the island prepping different things at the same time. There's been times when 3 of us are working at the island. There is seating at my island which I also love. We do not eat meals at the island but it's a nice place to sit when I'm not the one prepping the meal. As I type this my son and husband are working on the meal. My kitchen is big so an island works. An island doesn't work in all kitchens.

I think it totally depends on layout and kitchen size. There are some islands that I think our amazing and others that would prevent me from buying a house because they cause a ridiculous layout.

The OP posted just to draw attention to the company. I doubt the "poll' serves any useful purpose other than making you look at their website.

Even if it were a real question, it's too vague to answer. Cuz IT DEPENDS.

Hate them. Plan to rip them out of any house i buy and replace with a table. I don’t buy houses where sink or stove has been embedded in an island.

I like them but didn’t have room for one myself. Perfectly happy with a u shaker kitchen.

Count me in the group that believes this kind of poll--coming as it did from a pro who is not a regular on this board--is thinly-veiled spam. Which is why I read Sushi's comment the way I did (correctly, it seems) and found it so funny.

I appreciate the pros who regularly engage on these boards with helpful advice. Not so much the ones who swoop in only to self-promote (Answer this dumb poll! Look at the beautiful kitchen I just completed!).

I love the idea of a kitchen island, though some places try to squeeze too much into too small a spot.......a small spot just needs a smaller island ;) One size never fits all - even a 30" x 18" island can be a great help.

Yikes Pearl. Your spammy comment got me to look at your contractor link. One of your first kitchen posts has one of the least efficient layouts I've ever seen. Stovetop on the narrow part of the island with inadequate landing space on both sides, a double oven stack with microwave on top (that looks too high to be easily accessible), and a dishwasher at a 90 degree angle to the sink.

I think you've come to the right place to learn more about proper kitchen design. As you read through these threads, you can learn more about when islands make sense in a kitchen layout and when they are barriers or take up valuable aisle space.

It looks like kitchen design is not the core of your business and while your contracting skills might be great, I think having a fabulous kitchen designer will really boost the functionality of your future kitchens. Good job on reaching out!
