What color is the door now. I’m confused lol. I love he light stain and would match that color and put it on the gable details

the door was light and now it is dark - sorry, my pics were not ordered as the saga, and I don't seem to be able to edit my post. That light stain is gone and not re-doable.

I am considering a burgundy door or painting it a brown that is closer to the tongue-and-groove

I am unclear on the door’s current finish. Is the door now painted? Your board and batten siding is green. Perhaps a dark green in the same family as your siding?

I know this is an expensive and hard lesson but I'm wondering if you might not be happier replacing the door with maybe a mahogany door that'll take the dark stain much better than your alder one did.

If that's not an option, maybe a deep green in the same family as your siding or for a pop of color, a deep burgundy with orange undertones. Something along the lines of Benjamin Moore's Pumpernickel (2102-20) or Cimarron (2093-10).

Gotcha. Hmm for not I’d probably stain the gables that’s bothering me more than the door. Try matching it to the door color.

Can you provide a wider shot? There is something off-putting about the door not limited to the color. It looks cave-like, more like a cellar entrance, asymmetric, too small, mismatched style.

Thank you shead - it keeps me awake at night. The money doesn't bother me as much as the failure in my decisions and my loss of confidence in my ability to make some choices for the house. We are planning to rip it all out and redo next year. In the meantime, I need to get something I can live with for a year

Not a pro. I actually like the door color (painted). I think the dark looks good with your stone. I'm not jibing with the green board and batten or the reddish stained wood though.

HU-187528210 I am confused - my gables are stained (but door is now painted). And then there is stone. Are you saying I should stain all my wood around my entrance darker?

thanks anj_p but I love my green paint with my stone. I don't love the red color of my douglas fir truss but short of painting it, anything else would be caustic or major surgery

I don't hate my truss - I just hate it with my front door. Modifying the color of the front door is the oath of least resistance

here is a panoramic - I think part of what makes it look weird is there is dark painted plastic all over it. With that plastic off the door will look something like this other attached pic

I agree with those suggesting a darker green blending with the siding.

have you taken the plastic off yet to see how it all works when there is light coming through? you mentioned redoing it all in a year anyway. i think it just looks too heavy right now but as soon as the plastic is gone and there is light moving through it will be totally different. the inspiration door is beautiful! these lessons suck (trying to figure out my own as well)

Another idea is that maybe you paint just the sidelights to match the trim color around your windows and leave the actual door black. At least then the door would mimic the window color scheme. Then you might decide to just swap out the door instead of tearing the whole thing out a year from now.

Thanks shead, the sidelights and door are the same color as the trim around my windows. They are all a dark ORB type color.

No, I mean the lighter 1x4ish trim around the windows. The trim that separates the black window from the green siding.

I am thinking about just leaving it alone right now and we will tear the whole thing out and replace later this year

Yes, leaving it alone for now is the answer. In a year you will know what to do.

I had some similar things happen on my new build. Mostly as a result of being "encouraged" to change a decision I had already made or to hastily pick something, anything. After a year goes by its all pretty much not an emergency anymore.

I agree with Julie Clark and think your door will look fine once you remove all the plastic from the sidelights and clean up the entrance. It’s a bit misleading in your current photos because the entrance still looks like a construction zone. After you clean it up, and finish landscaping etc, it will look completely different.

once you take the painted plastic off, you may actually like it. I think the dark version you have now actually looks nice.

And remember...you will have lights on in your house, too, so the windows in the door and frame will be visible. Wait and see....

I would repaint the vertical siding the same off white as the applied stone .. The blue makes the house look too commercial.

Paint the front door and side lights blue.

Consider the same soft pink brick for your front entry.

to the OP: is this a new build? and you're going to rip it out next year? Before you throw good money after bad, why not hire a professional to help guide you through the process?

Diana, what type of professional are you recommending? Interior designer? I have thought of hiring someone but not sure what type of professional I would be looking for. Yes, it's a new build.

JJ, I have had to make some decisions under duress several times and it has not worked out well for me :-(

I'd paint it a lovely color pulled from flowers in the landscaping plan. <3

my architect recommended painting the door and trim around the sidelights a burgundy. Even he struggled with what to do now

Yes, it certainly is a dramatic space. If your architect is unsure of what to do with the door, perhaps hire a color consultant. Although Marylee H's idea of a toned down teal looks nice. And a burgundy would be pretty too. Try New London Burgundy (HC 61), Garrison Red (HC 66), Classic Burgundy, Cottage Red, or Warm Earth 1274.

You may have thought I was kidding about the Hunter Orange, I'm not. There are three houses on my street that have Hunter Orange (or close to it) front doors and they look good. It gives the house an anomaly to stimulate the senses, enhance the experience of the architecture, and create topic of conversation for first time visitors. Too many times houses are ordinary and mundane. Your grand space inside your home needs the proper introduction, do something outside the box for the color of the front door.
