Aesthetically, the best would be option 2 - to see shelves and drawers as you first come into the closet.

I lke the closet where my clothes hang on one side and hubbys on the other . We have window in our closet so that with a long dresser under it is the fist thing you see. I have a ton of shoes so that was the first part of the plan I also have about 4x the clothes hubby has . The design IMO needs to be practical first so what makes the most sense to you if you were imagining getting dressed in the morning.I think though in a small closet there should be no wasted space like you show in the corners but honestly I think you would be much better off with a reach in closet 31” of walk space is really too tight it is going to feel really small. but at least try to get those corners used for sure and in this small area I think #1 is a better way to go all the hanging space on one side and 15” drawers and shelving on the other will give you more walk space .

@Patricia Colwell Consulting all corners would be used. Option 1 shows the design from 2 different angles--both of which have the point of view where the drawers/shelves are in the middle. And having a reach-in closet is not an option lol so must deal with what I have and make the most out of it. Plus, I love having a small walk-in; forces me to keep everything tidy and not own excess.

I really like option one. Could you build some low-profile hidden storage drawers at floor level to keep valuables in, almost like toe kick drawers?

I’m thinking of doing option 2, but instead of having double hanging next to my long hanging, I would do: long hanging section and then a section of shelves with some hanging about mid height, and drawers/shoe shelves underneath that hanging section.

Ummm, thanks for the organizing tip, but need help with the layout, not with the organizing aspect.

The first one is better , it gives you more options for different type of clothes.

We did this

I get the entire left side plus two of the drawers. Bottom few shelves are spaced for my shoes.

I hang tops on the upper rail and pants etc on the lower rail.

I have only a few dresses and no long gowns. This is my Florida house so no long winter coats here.

I have a closet in our den where I keep my sun dresses.

With this design you could easily divide the rack for some long items.

These were custom by a small company here in Florida.

I was surprised at how many small companies there were.

We did a California Closet for daughter up north and it is low quality compared to this one.

In deciding, it all comes down to what you have and where else things are stored.

Up north I have loads of sweaters on shelves. But, I have other drawer space in the bedroom. Figure out how you want your space to function.
