Plants can "melt" a heart

For years we have brought our autos for servicing to a one man independent mechanic. He is honest and reliable but also quiet and a bit gruff. This past late Fall, as I was doing my annual pot up of "Paperwhites" and having some bulbs leftover and having just picked up my car, I made the connection and threw these remaining PW bulbs into a pot and drove it over to his shop.

It took a bit to convince him to keep it as I am thinking he didn't want the "responsibility" of having to nurture it to maturity as he admitted that he had no experience with "plants".

As is usually the case we don't keep in touch much (unless I have a car at the shop) BUT then slowly but surely he would, unsolicited, send pictures of the progress of the growth of his bulbs. And I think I could sense his excitement with the picture of that first white bloom. And unlike my pots with paperwhites which didn't last as long as I would have hoped he had one in bloom till late January! And all the time this pot was in his shop in the office i.e. he never took it home. Earlier this week I stopped by to pick up the spent flowers and pot. He was all smiles about his success :). (Next year I will definitely bring him an Amarylis bulb!)
