How to change heat pump defrost settings

I want to start by saying that as far as I know there are only two events that occur to cause the electric resistance strips in a heat pump system to kick on, those being:


1, During defrost mode, they kick in to keep the air blowing through the vents from being super cold because the unit is basically running in air conditioning mode to defrost the outside unit, this also kicks the strips back off after the defrost cycle is over, and allows them to cool down as the heat pump does it's normal operation.


2, As a suplimentational source for when the outside temp gets so cold the heat pump can't quiet heat as well as normal, which is also know as emergency heat, and is also a setting on the thermostat.
Now I have a heat pump that was installed in 2013. My mom chose to let some Billy Bob, back woods type guy, who runs a part time HVAC installation side business install the unit, instead of a reputable licensed technician from some place like lowe's.


For whatever reason this guy decided not to set the unit up properly in oder to "save us money on our electric bill" or so he claimed.
So when the unit goes into defrost mode NONE of the electric resistance strips kick on at all like they should to keep the air blowing through the vents from being so frickin cold. This super frostbite cold air which is blasting through the vents causes the ambient temperature in the house to drop anywhere from 3-5°F.


Once the temp drops so dramatically like that, the electric resistance strips kick on in the emergency suplimental heat mode, and warms the frigid cold air blowing through the vents up to a tolerable temperature. However they do not kick back off once the unit comes out of defrost like it should normally do because they are not running as a normal operation of defrost mode. They have kicked on this emergency setting instead, which causes the electric resistance strips to stay on until the house warms back up to the temperature set on the thermostat before they kick off again.


However because they are not running like they normally should, and they don't kick off after the defrost cycle is over, the fan inside has to continue to run for another 5 to 10 mins to cool the electric resistance strips down, which causes the house temp to continue to rise over what the thermostat is set at by anywhere from 2 to 5°F over.


I fail to see how if the resistance strips kicked on during a defrost cycle like they are supposed to, and then kicked back of once the defrost cycle is over like they are supposed to, would use more electricity than it does running the way it is now.


If anything it would seem to me that the same amount, or more electricity is being used with the way it's currently running, because the resistance strips are only kicking on because the temp in the house has dropped so dramatically, and then continuing to stay on until the temp of the thermostat is reached before they kick off, forcing the fan to run longer to cool the strips off.


Normally if they kicked off once defrost was over, by the time the temperature in the house reached the temperature the thermostat was set at, they would have cooled down, and the fan wouldn't have to keep running.


So basically I'm wondering how would I go about fixing this so that the electric resistance strips kicks on when the unit goes into defrost mode, and kicks back off once the defrost cycle is over, allowing the heat pump to run normally instead of having to keep the electric resistance strips running even after defrost is over only because the temp has dropped so dramatically?


Please let me know, as I would greatly appreciate it.
I have one bird, and I'm getting a baby bird next weekend and I know that the frigid cold air that is blowing out of the vents at them is not good for them at all.


So I really wanna get the unit running regularly like it's supposed to, rather than in this jerry rigged sort of way which blows such super cold air through the vents.

    You need to contact the maker of your heat pump.

    The heat strips work in three ways.

    (automatically) During defrost to temper the cold air

    (automatically) As auxiliary heat to supplement the heat pump.

    (manually) As Emergency heat when the compressor fails. Only the heat strips function, the compressor is locked-out.

    I know that's not what you want ... but if necessary in extreme weather where the compressor is icing over and not producing enough heat anyway, you should be able to force the heat strips on by setting the thermostat Mode to Emergency Heat, or E-Heat or however it's labeled. Unless your installer also screwed that up.

    @Patricia Colwell Consulting Why I didn't think of that?

    Oh that's right.... Because I did!

    They give me two options:

    1. Send someone out to inspect it, which will cost me money, and then probably repair/work on the unit which will cost me even more money.

    2. Call the dealer who installed it, who won't answer my phone calls, and has refused to do anything in the past, which is why I had to move the thermostat into the livingroom myself because he swore up and down it was supposed to be right there over the intake even though it was less than 2 feet from 3 exhaust vents which cause that small hall way to get hot or cold and shut the unit off while the rest of the house stayed cold or hot.

    Because the post originally was directed "@dada139" as I quoted.

    @dada139 is not @Patricia Cowell.

    I assumed it was a typographical or phone-keyboard error for @dadoes.

    Presumably I saw the post before you edited-in a correction.

    @dadoes Ok first I want to write an answer to your first comment, "The heat strips work in three ways."

    You see my problem I'm having is with #1, and is why I'm saying my unit isn't hooked up properly.

    When the system goes into defrost the heat strips don't come on at all, and so only super freaking cold air blows out through the vents in the house, and that's because of two things, 1. When defrost occurs the system switches into a sort of air conditioning mode, to send the hot coolant outside to melt ice, and the cold coolant inside, much the same as it does when it's actually on AC (which I'm sure you know), and 2. The heat strips don't kick on at all. The guy who installed it even said so after he was done, as he said this is supposed to "save me money", which I fail to see how, because the strips have to kick on anyway to bring the temp back up to where it's supposed to be after the cold air blows in and drops the temp because they don't kick on to temper the cold air blowing in in the first place, and all it does is freeze me to death because that cold air is unbelievable super cold, and the house temp drops anywhere from 3-4 degrees within minutes, depending on how cold it is outside, and how long the system runs in defrost.

    That is why I wondering, or want to know how I can fix it to make the heat strips come on automatically like they are supposed to, in order to temper the cold air blowing through the vents, so it's not nearly as cold as it is without them, the way it's currently running, and then kick back off automatically when it switches out of defrost and back into regular heating mode.

    Hope that makes sense.


    Now I wanna touch back on the username thing.

    Yes I did edit the post because after I typed her username, I had tapped on her profile to tag her in my reply and for whatever reason it didn't actually tag her, and just left her username instead.     @Stax Oh really? What gives you that impression?


    Because I very much do want an answer, as that's the exact reason why I posted in the first place, and I haven't "attacked" anyone at all. Merely repeated myself, and tried to help someone understand who I was referring to in a reply I posted when I didn't even use their username, so that they wouldn't be confused anymore.


    Besides No one who has replied including you has offered any actual solutions of any kind at all anyway. Everyone has just repeated what I've already said is supposed to happen, and doesn't, or what I've already done that didn't work, or got confused about what their own username is, except you who instead decided to troll.


    So I fail to see how me repeating myself, and trying to help someone understand something even though they are arguing with me about it when I'm right anyway is at all indicative of me not wanting any help.

    Hire a HVAC company to come out and set it up like it is supposed to be or determine if their are any issues with any of the components.

    @kevinande This is exactly what I'm trying to avoid. If I was ok with that I'd just go ahead and call the manufacturer and let them set up someone to come out, if they have someone other than they dude who installed it.


    The thing is I know there is a way to make it so they kick on like they are supposed to there has to be some setting or some switch or something that gets changed somewhere to make it work, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to just leave them off when it goes into defrost like that.

    @Stax uggh ok except we're not in court so you have no "case" in the first place, and just saying I rest my point doesn't prove you right either. But whatever you keep right on being a troll!
