Any level of radon in a home poses some level of health risk. A short-term radon test is a "sampling" or a snapshot in time. When the detected concentration is above 4 pCi/l, mitigation is recommended by the EPA. However, even at 4 pCi/l, there's a chance it could be higher than measured, particularly if it's a short-term test. Sounds like you are being advised to mitigate as a precaution. I think it's good advice.

IMO if testing was needed I would rather be on the safe side and do the mitigation.

Testing is the norm when someone buys a new house. The testing has cleared that it is at a 3, and that it is not seen as a hazard.

formulaross20 I agree with you on how I feel about this matter. The hype making us spend on such systems, for an assumed safety, makes maintaining a house a hassle. My house is a luxury home, with high ceilings and large windows in the basement. The air is ventilated enough as it is, we do not even have odors and other bad room purification issues.

The city of Denver has an average reading of 3, they haven't evacuated the entire city, so I think you will be fine.

Is the person doing the test, also the person who will be installing the mitigation system?

Mitigating radon where the levels are low to begin with need not be expensive and it may provide other benefits as well. One example would be the installation of a small ERV that would bring fresh air into the home and mitigate radon, too.

You need data, as reflected in Charles' comment "even at 4 pCi/l, there's a chance it could be higher than measured, particularly if it's a short-term test". I suggest you do several tests to verify that you really do have low radon levels.

formulaross20 all tests point to a 3. We have had as low as 1.8 , then average readings of 2 to 3, but we did have one spike, hence it has averaged to 3. We have had about 100 readings , and test was done twice.
