Can i put a smaller range hood insert into a larger range hood?

I'm living in a house I'm renting, so I can't do major renovations but I can do improvements and in exchange the landlord doesn't raise my rent. I live in a very nice neighborhood, one I can't afford to buy in, so this works for the next couple years.

There is currently no range hood insert but a 42 inch range hood. In searching for a 40 inch range hood insert, the cheapest one is $679, which is a lot to put in a property I don't own. The range is only 30 inches, so a 40 inch range hood seems to be excessive anyway.

Does anyone know if there's a way to put a smaller insert in safely?

@grayleaf do you have any photos you can share of something like this? I have a related issue - I would like to mount a 30" or 36" insert high in a tall 36" hood to maximize the containment volume but keep to an affordable insert size.

Hi there! While it isn't the most common, there have been times we have made a very long/large range hood and only need a certain size insert (for example 10' wide hood, only needing a 48" liner), so most often what we would do is install a stainless steel panel to allow everything to look smooth and coherent with the liner. Some people opt to add lighting to the "dead" panel space, and I would definitely recommend making sure you get the proper CFM for your space, but yes you can have an insert smaller than the range hood. Hope this helps!

No part of the wood can be closer than 30” to the cooking surface. Any part of the wood surface underneath that the insert doesn’t cover should be covered by a custom stainless steel liner. Which all adds up to more than the $600 right sized insert.

Hello everyone,

The hood I actually referenced is one we are finishing up here at the shop. Please bare with me as the insert is not in place yet, however I took this photo of the underside of the hood. It's roughly 10' long, but the insert is about 48" so we have some stainless steel panels on either side to fill in the gaps. (We have a protective coating on the panels to protect the surface before install, and please excuse the blanket coverings to protect the rest of the hood). I hope this helps! :)

If that is the underside, how does it contain fumes? Wouldn't you want to raise the inserts so that you create a box that can capture the air before it is vented?
