Kitchen decor advice

Hi. What could I put on top of the pantry which is beside the refrigerator? Should I move the rooster to that location and get something for corner? Thanks for your advice!!

You have an adorable kitchen. I love the dark cabinets and the counters. Is that Alaska Granite? Very pretty. What else were you thinking of putting above those beautiful cabs?

She says.....As a general rule, if you have under 2' of space above kitchen cabinetry, very tall armoires or built-ins, don't decorate the space. All too often, doing so dates you to the 1990's and the area does nothing but catch dust.

14 Genius Ideas For Above Your Kitchen Cabinets

I wouldn't put anything on top of the cabinets.

    Firstly, it reads as clutter.

Secondly it just attracts dust (and kitchen grease). The dust will fly around your kitchen and onto the food your are preparing.

Do you plan on hopping up on a high stool and taking down everything and washing each item and returning it?

    Probably not.

If the surface is clear, you can just take a Swiffer with the extendable handle and make a clean swipe of the whole thing a couple of times a week and be done with it.

If you plan to stay in this home for a long time and have $$ to spend you can invest in upper cabinets to go on top of the ones you already have, and you can put glass fronts in all or some . In them you can put items you would like display such as tureens, covered vegetable dishes, attractive vases, etc.

Also, La Cucina? Obviously it is the kitchen.

Your kitchen is great! I see why you feel you’d like something there to “fill” the white space and balance things out. I am not an interior designer, but when I see your rooster and hand-lettered decor I feel comfy there. If it were my kitchen, I would put up a couple/3 black lanterns and invest in a few of the candles with very realistic looking but subtle flames that come with a remote. I think it would bring warmth to that corner without being clutters, as shown in one of boxerpal’s pictures. Wow, boxerpal, so much great and helpful info! I’m excited to see what you decide to put there!

When I see items above cabinets in a kitchen it makes me think of the clutter of a TGIFridays or Applebees. Its just unnecessary stuff that is filling space.

I think to each their own, you can arrange a few things tastefully up there as one person posted beautiful pics. Don’t feel like you need to fill it up or put anything up there. It’s your house, do what you like! One persons junk is another’s treasure, the same goes for what some consider clutter.....Good luck!

By The way, I love your rooster and wall writing, my young daughters would not....different tastes.

Thank you Boxerpal! It is probably not Alaska Granite but don’t know for sure. I don’t want too much up there. I thought about a large vase or a wooden crate, but I have difficulty putting decor together so that it looks right. I see in your photos some ideas so thank you.

Thank you Susanne Woolley. I like the lantern idea. Right, I just want to balance it out in that open space.

Thank you Kim Reiner. I just want something simple in that open space that looks okay. I don’t want clutter.

Just remember that any decorative items you put in that location will need to be dusted/cleaned every month or so, which means someone must climb a ladder to retrieve them and hand them down to someone else. Once cleaned, reverse the retrieval action to put everything back up there.

I think some thoughtfully selected pottery pieces could look good on top of the cabinets. You also have the option to paint the wall above the cabinet a color that further develops your color scheme for the room.

Thank you felizlady. I know the items will have to be cleaned/dusted frequently and that is why I do not want any plants or a lot of items, just a couple on top of cabinets.

Thank you BeverlyFLADeziner!! Appreciate your pictures with ideas.

"I just want something simple in that open space that looks okay. I don’t want clutter."

"...and that is why I do not want any plants or a lot of items, just a couple on top of cabinets."

Jennifer, if those two comments are your intent, something similar to Beverly's suggestion would be very nice. Tasteful, simple and calming.

"Folks.....the OP's question was, "what could I put on top of the pantry?" To those of you who are not fans of decor on top of cabinets (and yes, everyone realizes we exist!), I think it's safe to say she wasn't asking you."

A reasonable answer to what to put up there is nothing. If she wasn't asking JohnQ Forum Reader, then exactly who was she asking?

    Do you now?

You decry how some of us couldn't wait to give decorating advice you don't appreciate.

But this is a social media site in which people solicit that very advice.

I like the writing and the rooster. For the item, I think the rooster needs another barnyard pal. Pick your favorite barnyard pal in a similar style and put her up!

I’d put the rooster above the pantry and leave the rest of the top bare. Use some rooster colors in accessories on the counter to bring the theme down. A tray to hold s/p, oil bottle, etc... It doesn’t take much to create balance.
