I use metal canisters for my cat food - stored in my bottom pantry rollout. They’ve always remained perfectly dry.

I Use a 4 gallon plastic bucket with a lid. Used to contain Costco Laundry Detergent. The bucket is rectangular vs round.

If you have to “buy” something, maybe a large cam square or two.

I have had one like this for years (my dog will be 12 in July.) Never had a problem with bugs or stale food, and I buy the large bags (Hendrix is about 65 pounds.) But I do pour the large bags of kibble into the bin; it's easier to scoop out than if I kept the food in the bag.

We use the SimpleHuman pet food container. I put the bag inside and that keeps him out of it as well. Not the cheapest solution but, as with all their stuff, it's designed very well (the scoop stores in the lid and the latch is easy to operate and very secure, it's also on wheels and the liner removes for easier cleaning if you choose to dump the food directly in) and looks good to boot.

Great conversation. I learned something on how to store dog food (after all these years). We keep our dog food in a sterilite rubber tub but I didn't realize that the fats and oils from the food could collect at the bottom and become rancid (I wipe out the tub but sometimes the food might be in there for two months) or that the nutritional value goes down after six weeks of being open. We empty (2) 3-lb bags of dachshund food for two dachshunds into the tub. @jim mat ever consider that the powdered detergent leeched into the plastic bucket which then will leech back into your dry kibble?

re using laundry tub, Yes, I was concerned about re using the bucket, but I got over it.

I have used Roundup, and I eat bacon.

I don’t have pets (my oldest daughter has severe animal allergies) but I have had a bin just like the photo chicagoans posted that I’ve kept large quantities of rice in for the last decade or so and I’ve never had even an inkling of an issue with bugs. I got my bin at Costco many years ago. I also have other buckets with gamma seal lids that I’ve had for probably 15+ years (for storing flour and sugars) and I’ve never had an issue with those either. I personally suspect that those who have had issues, it might be because the bugs were in the product before they stored it.

We have two 18 gallon Sterilite totes to store the food for our 4 dogs ages: 12, 10, 6 mon, 6 mon. One tote easily holds two 28 lb bags of food. We go through four 28 lb bags of food in four weeks. We've had dogs in our family for over 13 yrs and have never had rancid or stale food.

ETA: 12 yr is 90 lb lab/shepherd mix, 10 yr is 50 lb lab/chow/mutt, 6 mon puppies are german shepherd/husky mix currently 30 lbs each eating 3 times a day, little piggies.

I always buy a 25-30 lbs bag and it sits in the garage, both my large dog and my 16-year old cat eat the same food, next to each other...maybe that's why the cat is so old? Anywho, how is my dog going to tell me if the food isn't fresh? If he is hungry, I'm sure he will eat.

If you keep the bag sealed tightly and have it in any lidded container in the pantry, I don't think you'll have a problem with insects. (You have a lot of bug problems there?) I keep my pup's food in the bag on top of the refrigerator, closed tightly (sometimes tape, sometimes rubber bands). I have another tupperware-ish container which I use on a daily basis and refill as needed. I did read once that kibble should not be kept in a clear container exposed to light.

We've used the container chicagoans posted for years now, no issues. I do wipe it out when we get to the bottom, before refilling.
