I visually stretched your cabinets to the ceiling, and I don't think it squeezes the space. It will, however give you more out-of-sight storage. Go for it.

Painting them white will visually allow them to recede into the wall space and help the room feel larger. I also agree with raising them to the ceiling for more storage space.

I love that idea, if you can get the taller ones. A person can’t have too much h storage even if you need a step stool occasionally to reach the top shelf

How about a floor to ceiling cabinet so you can hang clothes, then cabinets to the ceiling on one side?

Was there anything wrong with the nice vintage Maytag washer & dryer other than being old? Those GEs won't provide near the same service life.

@dadoes, you are spot on! We had the new washer and dryer delivered on July 2. Already, the dryer's motor has gone out in less than 5 months. Now we are waiting 5-7 business days to get the part. We hated to part with our 1985 appliances, as they were still working just fine, and we knew the new ones would have issues because everyone we know who has bought a new appliance within the past 20 years has had to replace or repair. It's disgusting that manufacturers refuse to build trustworthy appliances. Heck, GE's warranty is only 12 months. This just shows how much faith they have in their dryer. BTW, our old dryer had issues, so yes, it needed to be replaced.

I did stock cabinets , I guess 42” or whatever, in former house laundry room, up to 8’ ceiling and they were great. Of course needed a stepstool to reach high shelves but it added a ton of storage for supplies and craft things and looked sleek.

I'm only 5' tall and didn't realize that by installing ceiling height cabinets that were 60" off the floor and 15" deep, I would not be able to reach ANY of the contents of the upper cabinets without a stool. I'm thankful that we decided on a broom closet next to the washing machine, as most of the everyday items are stored there.

Just to say, parts could probably been found for your Maytag dryer. Some have been discontined (Whirlpool bought Maytag in 2006 and is obsoleting vintage Maytag parts as time passes) but new-old-stock, used, and some non-OEM parts can be found on eBay and Amazon. Dryers are mechanically simple and some items (belts, drum rollers, heating elements) typically are common among a range of models.

Any chance your room really has taller ceilings? I have 8 ft. ceilings and measuring 42 inches down from my ceiling is MUCH closer to my washer & dryer than yours appear to be. I too would like to add cabinets to the ceiling, but don't know what size to look for. Thanks!

How tall are your washer dryer? Mine are 38” tall and I have 40” uppers above them. Works great
