Script Wall Art - Tacky?

last modified: 5 years ago

We are in the process of rearranging and accessorizing our living room. We have a large blank wall to fill. To the right is our mantel (that is STILL currently decorated for Valentine’s Day). The fireplace normally has the mirror, candlesticks, vase with green foliage and one picture. So it’s somewhat full.

We need to fill the blank wall but I think it still needs to be somewhat simple. Is wall word art tacky? My husband isn’t really a fan of the abstract minimalist art that I’ll post pictures of.

Our connected kitchen is going to have watercolor flower wall art.

Any suggestions?

I would add one large, square piece of art, something with blue and other colors to add some depth and color to the room. Sit down and view artwork on a site such as Wayfair or art.com - there are all sorts of styles, colors, etc. , so surely there is something that will appeal to both of you.

It's absolutely not tacky if you like it. I wouldn't add it just to fill a space, but if you come across something that really resonates with you, then it becomes "real art", and is every bit as acceptable as a painting or photograph would be hanging on your wall.

@Celery. Visualization, Rendering images, so many people are still selling this art on etsy, I didn’t realize it was about out of style.

What about something like this in my space. It’s my mountains from back home so that would make me happy. Color wise though?

I think that wall art is better than words.

Art absolutely doesn’t have to match your decor. It stands alone. The picture with the mountains is beautiful. Please no unimaginative word art in your nice space.

word art is outdated. sorry! find some good art. it doesn't have to be expensive, it just needs to resonate with you. if original art is out of your budget, my favorite places for affordable prints is Society 6, where you can choose the material its printed on (wood, metal, canvas, paper) and you can buy it framed or unframed. since the're on-demand prints, you can choose from a selection of sizes.

or for soemthing a bit more handmade feeling, check Etsy. I bought a beautiful graphic screen print and used a poster frame I found on sale. the whole thing cost me about $50, but it still feels more original than what you can get at a chain store.

it also doesn't need to be photos or a painting. consider other materials:

    from Etsy:

    From wayfair:

or like this, in a horizontal orientation (sorry I don't know the source of this one, google "metal wall art"):

@Celery. Visualization, Rendering images I really like the first grouping option.

Does it make it to busy with the fireplace right next to it?

    @User, thanks

I really like the wood mountain art you posted from Etsy.

Not busy. You can go with 2 or 3 wall arts instead.

Haven't you seen the Dr. Rick's seminar ads? No wall art!

    I hate word "art".

CVRI Love your renderings, wish you could give some suggestions on my thread

Like your mountains. You said ....it makes me happy...so it has my vote because the piece means something to you.

Real art. I'm not going to post suggestions because to me, art is personal. I go to local art shows, visit galleries, or look for art when I'm traveling (well, that is, when I could travel). I also look for interesting things that are not exactly "art:" I have copper trays, wood carvings, woven camel bags and kilims on my walls as well as paintings. They all reflect me (and my hubby), our lives and experiences. There is no "word art" or mass produced art that can do that nearly as well as the odd and quirky pieces we've collected over the years.

^^ Agree. The only exception would be artistic colorful or illuminated calligraphy in foreign alphabets.
These look more like art to my eye than sayings.

In a culture that can't communicate without a device in hand, word art has become a way to express something without communicating verbally or through our actions. IMO it another means to isolate us from each other. Why talk? Just point to your wall art, or grab your smart phone and start texting! That would be a firm NO!!!

To answer your question directly, yes, it’s tacky. Others have given you many great suggestions as alternatives. You have a lovely room.

I think the room needs to repeat the blue in your chairs. Also, the chairs should be slightly angled and not flat against the wall.

3 framed prints and a Fiddle Leaf tree from World Market would work nicely in the room.

Are the blue wall prints from World Market as well?

Nope. You will likely find them in custom sizes on Etsy. They don't have to be foliage. There are a variety of concepts.

Can't say that I'm a big fan of script art.

I remember seeing one decorating wag describe wall art/sayings as 'The Devil's Graffiti"

Here's a palette for art, not messages. You can go abstract or represenetational. Look for art prints you like online--could be one wide horizontal or a series of three vertical prints.

Industrial II Fine Art Giant Canvas Print, Black, Beige, 54"X54" · More Info

"Gold Leaves." Original Artwork By Kanayo Ede · More Info

LARGE MODERN ARTWORK-"Blanche" · More Info

Society6 is a source of very affordable prints by different artists. Here's just one art source from society 6 that could be arranged across your wall. Then spend time going to art shows, museums, taking an online modern art course, and you'll start to get a feel of what you like and begin looking for it.
