I'm not surprised. I know I've been instructed that canned goods "may" lose quality after a couple of years, but apple butter is apples, sugar and spice, I think that combo would stay pretty consistent for that period of time. And, of course, it doesn't matter if it oxidizes, because it's already dark!

I found 'something in a jar' in the back of my liquor cabinet a couple weeks ago. It was a quart jar of moonshine that a farmer friend gave me a few years back.

It still scares me as much now as apparently it did back then because I never opened it.

I think I too would be a little scared of someone else's moonshine. 🤨 😄

The county managed to put a big fear of moonshine into me back when I was so young and innocent that I did not even know what moonshine was. Every year the county had a an anti-moonshining display in one of the free tents at the end of summer fair. They told of blindness, death, and misery. They showed black and white photos of all sorts of chunky-lumpy goop in a huge vat with dead rats floating in it. I was convinced. No moonshine for me. Moonshine, whatever that was. But the feeling sticks with me.

Well, I've never made nor canned moonshine, so the errant jar on my shelf definitely won't be that.

Dad used to make corn wine, though, so maybe that's sort of similar, and he would let cider get "hard" then freeze it. He told me the stuff in the middle that didn't freeze was "apple jack". The only grapes we grew were Concord, so they were strictly for jam! I'd eat the jam but no one could ever convince me to actually consume that other stuff, LOL.
