Help with Rug Size

We are looking to buy a new rug for our living room. Currently have an 8x10 size where just the front legs of our sectional are barely on the rug. For the rug we are considering, the next size is 8' 9" x 12' 6". This would be large enough for the side of the sectional and side table near the middle of the room to be fully on the rug, but just, no extra behind the couch (which I've read there should be at least several inches of?). On the wall side of the sectional, the larger rug would cause the side table to be half on and half off the rug.
We are torn on what to do. I don't want the rug to look too small but also don't want to pay for a larger rug if it may just cause more design problems. Plus the larger size is literally twice the cost. Can anyone help share their opinion?
Thank you!

We know that what you have now is not working. You need need to bite the bullet and go bigger.

Since you want to be economical, then I would map out the second possibility.

Thanks for your response. I guess I'm not sure what you're suggesting. You suggest mapping out the second option you show, which is basically what I have, which you say is not working. So I'm just confused.

Start with moving the couch over. It should be a lot more to the left side. I like bigger rugs but that’s my personal opinion

Not exactly. Yours barely have the front feet on the rug.

But.....looking closer, this is a sectional. Could the first option work better?

    Everything on the rug?

Before you go spending money, consider rearranging the furniture and art.

Start by moving out the leather chair, the coffee table and take down the art.

Slide the end table in the corner, push the sectional over so the back to wall piece is centered on that wall.

You should wind up with a floor lamp in the front corner and the other floor lamp to the left of the window.

Now you hang the art, as you did, with one piece above each cushion.

There is no need for the sofa to be so close to the wall. Pull it out a few inches With the new arrangement all front legs should be well on the rug.

One of the problems is you are trying to fit that oversized trunk into the scheme…it is taking up too much room.

What to do with the leather chair? Let’s see a photo of the other side of the room.

The other side of the room is our TV wall. A large window runs between the recliner and TV wall. The room feels quite large for one space but too small to make into two separate areas. The wall the sectional is against faces our kitchen and dining area, and with young kids we like the openness, but it makes us feel like there is only one way to lay out the room.

We used to have a sofa centered under the art. When we got the sectional I actually liked that it was off center because we usually arrange things very symmetrically and I liked changing it up. The recliner is my husband's favorite seat and we need seating in addition to the sectional. We have tried putting it in different places in the room and nothing has looked right to us.

If we move the sectional more to the left I don't know what to do with all the space that would be left between the side of the sectional and the wall unit.

    I appreciate the feedback!

I would really appreciate any additional input. If I can't redesign the whole room right now, what would be the suggestion just regarding rug size? Moving the sectional to the left some and keeping this size rug, or a larger rug to go completely under the sectional on the open side? Thank you!
