Never were asbestos to my knowledge, essentially just cardboard.

I usually agree with millworkman, but I do know that some ceiling tiles of differing sizes were manufactured using asbestos. Here is some background info: Asbestos ceiling tiles

But you can never determine this by visual inspection alone. An accredited lab should be able to analyze a small sample for under $100.

They could hae asbestos in them. There was a plant not far from where we used to live that manufactured tiles that looked just like that, and they did have asbestos in them. The only way you will know for sure, is if you have them tested.

They are of the age that they could have asbestos. My guess from the 1940-1960. I think they look a lot like the ones that were in my grandparents basement which was finished off in the 1950's or so.

Depending on your state, the Declaration by the Seller document completed when the property was listed for sale, may require declaring asbestos (among many other things) on the property. But, if it's As Is, testing is the smart option.

Typically a seller only has to make a disclosure about asbestos if they know for sure, meaning they’ve had it tested and got a positive result back. Just because something might be asbestos is not enough to trigger a required disclosure.
