Rather than following a trend, I follow my heart. If a thing makes me smile, its a keeper. If not, bye bye. Unless you’re taking photo’s to sell your home, keep it the way that makes YOU happy.

Leave it empty for a month. Then look at the "before" photos and if those photos look better to you, put the stuff back up. I'm betting you won't.

I like your stuff up there, except the plants. If your friends will mock you for not being fully on trend with what's on top of your cabinets, get new ones.

I've struggled with the same issue, and finally arrived on hanging three pieces on the wall in the space above the cabinets (we have maybe 22" of area) that have special meaning to us and are large enough to make an impact. In the corner is placed a very large African bolga basket, and that's it -- nothing else on top. It's just enough to fill the void (and it definitely felt like a void; I tried leaving it bare but it did not feel right to me), without being cluttered or insubstantial.

Most people will probably tell you to leave the space empty, but only you can know if you're going to really be happy with that look. Give it time. Weigh your options. Then go with what your gut tells you is best. There's no right or wrong solution here; just do what is most pleasing to your eye.

I wish there were an after photo to compare. But I'm sure I will like it better because I don't like that before look at all. I'm curious if you got used it it being bare after a month, or if you decided you liked it how it was. Which is fine too because we're all different and that's the beauty of life!

Hon, the police won’t arrest you for decorating in a manner to suit YOU! If you like your things and they don’t require too much time cleaning, put them back.. I decorate our house to suit my husband and me. If our friends like it-bonus! If they don’t, that’s ok. I love my friends anyway. But I want to be happy in my house. If you get pleasure from the things that are interesting or meaningful, display them. Have you noticed how soulless and similar so many of the houses featured here are? I don’t live in a hotel and I don’t want my bedroom to look like the Hampton Inn. I don’t live in a magazine and I want MY things in my kitchen. I do think we sometimes leave things on display so long they become meaningless, so I like to move things and change the focus.

Yes, decorate for you. If you like what is up there you can leave it, or change to fewer things.

It looks like a great kitchen. Too bad that whoever designed that kitchen didn’t take the cabinets to the ceiling.

Not taking the cabinets to the ceiling was my call. It had nothing to do with the price. I didn't want to break up my crown molding. The kitchen was remodeled in 2016.. cabinets to the ceiling weren't quite as popular as they are now.

I have a few pieces on top of my cabinets (I have a little more space between my cabinets and ceiling).I personally don’t like a lot of clutter anywhere, so obviously I don’t like a lot of things on top of cabinets. But I think several well placed pieces that appeal to you are absolutely fine. As most here replied...it is your home! Make yourself happy.

I beg to differ. I did my kitchen in early 2016. Cabinets to the ceiling was already the preferred approach.

You have a beautiful kitchen. I think you are just not used to seeing it less busy. I love it with nothing above your cabinets. It looks so much better to me. You have a bossy floor with a busy pattern, keeping the other surfaces plain, simple, fresh and clean really makes your kitchen look nice.

I really like it with nothing on the tops of the cabinets. Live with it a while, you will get used to it. It really is a great kitchen and now you can see the pretty molding you didn’t want to disrupt.

I had cabinets that didn't reach the ceiling in my last house and I have them now in my camp. Too much stuff and it looks cluttered, nothing and it looks baron/unfinished. I have a U shape kitchen at camp and what I have up there I use regularly . I have 3 baskets and a bud vase. I do have one thing that is not used up there, but I like it. It is a ceramic bear.

I agree with Carrie. Leave it for a month or so and then come back to it. If you still prefer the items above the cabinets, then put them back. It's your Kitchen, it should make you happy! (Other than the possible dusting issue, this is an aesthetic decision, not a functionality issue.)

OMG, I just have to tell you honestly, when I saw your first photos I thought your kitchen was older and ready for a remodel. I was so focused on the stuff above I guess I didn't even register the rest of the kitchen. My mind just registered "dated" and "clutter" and didn't look further. Now that I see the new photo, it's gorgeous! It really is night and day to my eye.

I like it much better without the items; it brings attention where it belongs- to your beautiful kitchen.

I'll have 24" to the ceilings, in my new kitchen, which gives me space to place my ceramics from our years of travel while on duty. Your home - your decor style.

Having stuff on top doesn’t bother me, but I would prefer it with fewer items. I don’t have uppers in the kitchen, but I do have things on top of the fridge. I have an upright freezer in the pantry and stuff on top there as well. It’s your house, so you do it how you want!
