I live in Iceland. This is the way we have been doing it for years. Have had mine for 12 years. Never heard of anyone getting a thermal shock. And I worked at Siemens and Bosch so trust me never happened here.

The problem is oversized pans. If you read your appliance manufacturer's instructions, you aren't to use a pan larger than the pan outline on the appliance. People don't and the oversized hot pan conducts heat onto the countertop surface. This is particularly worrisome if the top is engineered stone as the tops in your pictures apparently are.

This crack is from using an engineered stone island top as an ironing board, and irons aren't all that hot and as consistently hot as a pan on a stove. She can live with this, she has little choice but replacement, however, a blowout in a cooktop cutout corner would probably permanently distort the engineered stone and become visible with contamination soon.

Just because you can do something (like flush mount a cooktop) doesn't mean you should.

Thank you - I think there is a misunderstanding. The stone we selected is granite. It’s not engineered. See the gray slab and the up close detail. The first picture is showing the cooktop (not our counter) from the showroom.

The reason I posted the question was to see if anyone had a cooktop like this in a stone that is “leathered” - that is the rougher finish of a natural stone. Thanks again.

I am wondering the same. Our fabricator is concerned that the slight uneveness of the leathered quartzite would not be ideal for a true flush mount cooktop. He asked to please not do flush mount.

I am going to do it too - leathered silver waves will be the counter. It's not super rough, so we'll flush mount the induction top. I will also be flush mounting the electrical pop ups in the island for a leaner look.

The talent of your fabricator is key here.
