Electrical help pls!

Calling all electricians, we have a general question we are hoping you can answer. We are trying to replace a 30” electric cooktop with a 36” induction cooktop. The former is rated for 40 amps, while the latter requires 50 amps. Is it common to convert a 40 amp electrical circuit to 50 amp by simply switching out the braker? Or is it necessary to replace the 8 gauge wire to 6 gauge? Our electrician recommends rewiring, whereas our contractor says that the existing 8 gauge wiring is sufficient (we actually heard this from a few contractors during the estimation process). Is our electrician just being overly conservative? Our contractor thinks the electrician is just trying to make extra money! Thank you for any advice.
