Cabinet Drawer Pull Size

Trying to decide the length of the pulls on a few drawers that are 36" wide by about 8.5" deep. Went to a cabinet hardware store and one of the young ladies said 12" is as big as she would recommend. My first thought was to go 16" or larger. Any considerations for functionality and optics? Drawing attached shows two pulls per drawer, but I think one long one would look better. Any thoughts?

I am having the same difficulty! I decided not to do bar pulls (originally thought like you to do long ones), but I found some pulls on sale that I LOVED! They only had 5" available, so I thought those would be perfect. Two for large drawers and one for smaller. Then I got notice they could not fulfill my order. When I went back to the product page I saw the 8 3/4" pulls are now available, but I am concerned that those may be too small for a 36" drawer. But these pulls have a lot of weight and heft to them, so I think it could work. Do you think 8 3/4" would be too small on the larger drawers?

Check out Houzz photos and see what you like the look of. Long pulls are very modern. I went with single pulls, but only 4-7" depending on drawer size for my more traditional/transitional look.

I have been reading & looking @ everything. The thing is I just love these pulls. The shorter ones I ordered would have been perfect! They are hybrid between a pull & bin pull. They say the rule is 1/3 the length of drawer so perfect for my 24” drawers, but maybe too short for 36”, but since they are bold I think it could work...🤔

A 36 inch drawer needs ONE PULL, AND NINE OR 12 inches is fine. The uppers/doors look great with nine inches, no matter what you use below......and hopefully, nine works on that smaller left drawer door combp.

I detest two pulls on a drawer. You want one centered single motion, with one hand. Not two.

Top knobs.com is an excellent source of pulls, finishes and sizing variety.

Nine on everything ..........no drawers were larger than 24. Where they are smaller ^Six inch

Note that placemennt can vary based on the bulk of the pull.

Pull should be 1/3 the width of the drawer. That looks the most proportional. Vary the size pulls in the kitchen with the size of the drawers. That’s why so many pull sizes are offered. If you can’t decide between two pull sizes, make an aluminum foil mock-up in the two sizes, and hold them up against the drawers. That visual is very effective in making a choice.

I don’t like two small pulls on a drawer for a practical reason. People tend to grasp just one to open the drawer rather than using two hands. Over time this causes the more-used pull to loosen and/or twist, and even causes the drawer to rack over time. One pull is preferable.

Agree with @JAN MOYER in a perfect world, she would decorate my home.

OMG! They sent me the pulls they said they canceled! Well, looks like I may have two on some drawers, but my new cabinets can be opened with a pinkie finger. So I am not too concerned about future issues. Cabinets aren’t installed & if I don’t like them when I hold them up I’ll pivot to something else.

In my kitchen, I used pills that were approximately 1/2 the size of my drawer width. The drawers in the middle of the stack are 36” with an 18” pull.

Badgergal, thanks for the visual. I do like the look of the longer pulls.

The pulls on the left drawers are slightly over 12 inches and the drawers on the right have 10 inches pulls. I used the 10” pulls on my upper cabinet doors.

My 4’ drawers will have 28 1/2” Amerock bar pulls. The 3’ drawers will have the same style, but 22”.

I know that’s waaay longer than the norm; but I like the look. I wanted all the drawers to have a very linear appearance, without the smaller breaks (and larger spaces in between) of narrower pulls.

Because I have a lot of drawers, I am using that same drawer/pull ratio throughout. It seems like it will be a more sleek look IMO.

Although, again, it’s definitely not the recommended pull width. And just FYI, I definitely recommend only one pull per drawer for the reasons both @JAN MOYER and @M Miller stated above.

A four foot drawer in a kitchen is an instability issue waiting to happen............: ) Just saying. Centered pull or no centered pull. Use it for potato chips.

Hi @JAN MOYER - I hope not. All of the drawers are full plywood and have heavy duty runners. 12 of them are four feet.

I do love potato chips, but no way can I eat that many! Now if we add marshmallows to the mix...hmmmm...😉

Just saying, my custom cabninet guy would never do it. Same high end. ...But good luck and do not overload any.
