1916 house here. I recognize the newel post because it is like mine. Our staircase is also set up in the same ways yours is. Our first floor, landing and stairs are all oak. Our second floor is maple floors.

We used to have carpeted stairs and then pulled it up and had the stairs refinished. We also got an expensive surprise that some of the oak treads were in such bad shape that they needed to be replaced. Originally we had thought about installing a runner, but it's been six or seen years now and we still just have the wood stairs. I don't think we'll end up doing a runner since these are just fine the way they are.

Thank you for the great comment. We have to have a runner because of our age. I am worried about finding damage under the carpet. Leaning toward wall to wall stairs.

if you need to save money and avoid refinishing, then wall to wall carpet sounds like the way to go. don't worry about looks -- your stairs look bad now because the carpet is boring and old. but once you pick a fresh new carpet, it'll look great.

don't do cushioning -- it seems safer, but I read that it actually increases your chances of falling. (the added bulk shortens the treads and rounds the edges.) also keep in mind that soft carpet material is kind of slippery. I do like the idea of a non-padded, simple berber for traction though, like this:

Thanks, like all those ideas. Right now the two steps to the landing have carpet treads. Do you think I should carpet those two steps? My daughter thought the landing should be carpeted but I hate covering up that hardwood. I actually prefer the treads and area runner.

I think treads on one set of stairs and full carpet on another (with a bare landing) doesn't look very good. if you must have some kind of carpet on those two steps, then do the same wall-to-wall as the rest of the stairs and also do the landing to tie it all together.

if you think you can get away with no treads on that short little run, then leave them bare and also leave the landing bare. if you're worried about slipping, maybe look into anti-slip clear coat on those two steps?

Help…. I know that carpet isn’t something people renew these days
But for many reasons…. I’m going to replace my carpets with carpet 🤷‍♀️and of course I’d like something light
But I can’t find anything the stairs and entrance to bedroom are slanted so loopy carpets aren’t the best
We have no pets just grandchildren
Would love some advice
