You need to post a floor plan with measurements to get help. Look for a CKD not cabinet salesperson to get help with the best layout for your space. 42" cabinets will be unreachable without a step stool. I have 36" and need a grabber or step stool to reach items on the top shelf. If you're gutting why would you paint cabinets?

I can't think of how to change the layout to keep the dishwasher and sink together yet center them with the window.

You should be able to centre the sink by installing a blind corner cabinet to the left of the dishwasher (on the range wall) and then scooting the dishwasher & sink into the ~12" you gain by removing the lazy susan.

I don't see what the problem is. The dishwasher and cabs are centered on the window. Since the dishwasher is black and the cabinets wood, no matter where you put it on that bank of cabinets, there will be a striking asymmetry. Where the sink is now, the wall is balanced.

BTW I have a setup like that, and I love it, because I can see my whole yard from the sink.

I'm thinking if you move the sink, you won't just have the new asymmetry caused by the blackness of the dishwasher, you will be washing dishes and looking right at the neighbors opposite. That might not be optimal. I'd leave the sink and put something outside and to the left, so you can have a pleasurable view. It sure would cost a lot less.

You plan to gut the space? Those cabinets look to be in really good shape, new really. Please donate them to an organization like Habitat for Humanity so they can be repurposed.

Your title states you are gutting the kitchen, but you mention painting cabinets, so most of this advice might not apply.

You can offset the faucet, which will help disguise the asymmetry, but if you're actually gutting the kitchen, I'd suggest switching the sink and DW, to get the DW out of the prep space. If you center the sink and put the DW on either side, it will be difficult to access the corner cabs on that side, with the DW door open--which is why the NKBA recommends locating a DW at least 21" from a perpendicular cabinet run. You have probably already discovered that on the left side. I would also suggest using drawer bases, rather than drawer/door cabs. Store you dishes in drawers and/or uppers beyond the open DW door, for easy unloading.

You'll need a trash pull-out below the prep space between the sink and range.

I like the idea of the 42" cabinets, even if the top shelf won't be as convenient. Stacked cabinets are also popular now, but more for style than function--unless you also install a library ladder. ;)

Also — if you’re right handed, you might prefer having DW on the right.

p.s. switched my folks’ 65 yr old (homemade) cabinets to IKEA’s taller to-the-ceiling versions — and it makes the space look SO much larger. We’re all tall, but mostly keep rarely needed items at the top. Perfect for seasonal serving platters, etc.

I really don't think the sink needs to centered on the window. I would, however, keep the faucet centered on the cabinet. I would get rid of the soffits.
