Yes, Carolina. I dont know why that didn't show up. Would camellias do okay in afternoon sun from the west?

House design not compatible with matching pairs. Also Camellia japonica gets pretty big.

The problem with the azaleas will be something going on with the rooting environment they don't like. Something about the soil itself or maybe a pest/disease issue.

Go to an independent garden center - where unlike a warehouse store plant department you should be able to connect with an employee who is there specifically to assist customers with making plant selections - during the time of year you want flowers to be present. And choose something that will look good against the pretty assertive color of the siding. If you think the exposure is hot choose plants recommended for full sun in your climate region.

Thanks Embothrium. I'll probably take a whole house picture to the garden center so they can better help me. This is only one of the beds, but the bed that looks the worst. The other has butterfly bushes and hosta so far coming up that I know of and all the beds have various odds and ends, lillies?, hosta, some kind of grassy clumps that I might wait to see what blooms, etc. I have a feeling I'll be working on this front yard forever before I even start on the back. All I know is the azaleas are not liking this spot at all, aside from the one.

If you are doing most of the yard now and live in or near an urban center consider bringing in somebody working under handles like garden coach, garden consultant or garden designer to help you decide what to do.

I might be able to do that. I am doing a little bit at a time and saving the back for next year. I'm only working part-time now while helping take care of my granddaughter so trying to keep finances realistic.

PS. I have a camellia here in northern VA that is on the west side of our house, but there is some shade from a huge old oak and a bit from an extension of the house, so it does get pm sun and it is doing great-loaded with blooms this year (all of which will get zapped Thursday night when our temps are predicted to go into the 20s. Ugh).

Cyn427, thank you. I love our pink house!!! It is what attracted us, and the inside sealed the deal. But ohhhhh the landscaping is going to be a chore. Decades old abandoned grape vines and just random stuff everywhere and nowhere that makes sense. We're about 3 1/2 hours from Raleigh but maybe my son will take a drive out with me for a day trip. I love camellias and hope to find a great spot for at least one, but it's a narrow front yard and I think they will be too big unless I really over pruned it. Maybe there is a smaller variety? I'm also dying to put a hydrangea here somewhere. Lol This house needs a hydrangea.
