big city location?

Do they smell citrusy?

It could have come from a neighbor's yard but I can't find any similar pods in their yard. No it doesn't smell citrusy. I've planted them in pots to see what develops. I live in Dallas in the middle of the city so it isn't necessarily a native plant.

The measurement is 24.26 mm. Yes, there are two Camellia plants close to where I found them and I did look up what a Camellia pod looks like and they do look like alike with the exception the covering wasn't thick. The inside was squashy but it could be decomposing as it was wet and broken open. The entire pod began to root sitting on top of the ground. From what I saw on line it looks like when mature the seeds fall out of an open pod. I have placed them in a pot and will see what happens. It could very well be Camellia...at least I hope so because we lost two this year from an unusual freeze. Thanks for your help.

seedlings of named cultivars.. may or may not come true ... so who knows what you might end up with... but it will be fun finding out ...

meaning???? ... it may or many not be a garden worthy plant for one reason or another ...

Maybe Texas persimmon (Diospyros texana)?

The seeds don’t look right, nor do the skin, fruit end or texture.

I don't think it is persimmon, I am familiar with that plant and I don't have any around me.
