Thank you for this! There seems to be such a wide variation on the photos of finished product. Makes it hard to decide!

I would say that you can achieve some of the color variation of the CLE tile by mixing the three Montauk tiles but you're not going to reproduce the "noticeable variations in thickness, depth, color, shade, size and crazing"* of the Zellige tile. However the edges of the Montauk tile are certainly rough so maybe that would be close enough. And it's about 1/3rd the price!

Honestly? If you want the look of zellige, do it. Why settle? The Montauk tiles simply won’t have the same depth and dimension, just like a wood-look tile doesn’t have the same warmth as wood.

I’d love to just do it, but I’m having trouble finding a brand other than CLE. I read some awful reviews and would love other suggestions for true zellige, if you have any suggestions!

I don’t have any other companies to suggest... sorry. I used cletile and was absolutely blown away by how gorgeous they are. My sister was considering the Montauk, so I looked at them in store... they’re just not the same. I would definitely recommend seeing them in person before you make any decisions.

I’ve seen Zia pop up in IG photos, but I haven’t seen them IRL.

I got a sample from our designer of Zia Casablanca White zellige yesterday, and it's stunning. But it's 3/4" thick... I posted separately to ask Houzz folks if that's going to be an installation issue.

I was wondering what you ended up doing. I am now in a same situation. I really like the look of the zellige tiles but I read so much about the issues that come with choosing this tile material (broken pieces, time it takes to be delivered, installation, etc.). I am considering the Montauk and came across this discussion. I was wondering if you don't mind sharing what you ended up doing and if you are happy with your choice. Thank you kindly.

Maria- I ended up ordering a million samples and comparing the looks. Ultimately, I decided that we will do the zellige from Riad tile. I found these to be more uniform and in better shape than the CLE tile I ordered samples of. Once it’s done, I’ll be sure to come back a d a photo! we won’t start for a few months more.

wdccruise, you are correct that the 4"x4" Zia zellige tile is 3/8" thick, but the2" x 6" tile I'm sourcing is actually a hefty 3/4" thick. Hard to believe, right!?

I ordered a sample of all zellige looks. I ended up going with Riad too. I truly wanted to love the cle tile, but the variations of color, terracotta showing in some areas because of the variations wasn’t something I wanted. It is beautiful though!

Im planning to order snow zellige from Riad tile for my shower, but im having installation problems. Its so thick & mitering edges is so expensive. But how else do you finish it?! Has anyone had this issue?

Yes @mollykelley80… that’s why we wound up ordering ceramic Wow brand “fez” instead. Another option is Renaissance tile based in Atlanta I think. They have showrooms throughout the Southeast and TX. Look at their “Oasis” line, it’s standard thickness. This design was the inspiration for my new bathroom, using Oasis “puddle” glaze. Ultimately for us in CA we didn’t want to pay $750 in freight. But it’s a gorgeous tile.

@User I'm in CA as well... $750 is a lot for freight! But cheaper than the $6,000 installation fee of Zellige!!! It's craziness! I need to ask my tiler how much the cost would go down if I didn't miter the edges but used a Shleuter piece instead. Not my first choice, but I did find one that was very thin and looked like it would match the grout and possible look like a grout line? I don't know! I'm not sure how it will be such a thin line when the tile is so thick. Having trouble picturing this.

Hi @Ariayn Jeter! Here are some updated photos with the Schluter issue fixed and grouted. "Warm Gray" I think was the grout choice for the Wow tile on the shower/bath tub walls from Custom Prism grout brand.

Has anyone used the Ivy Hill Tile Amagansett Gin 2 in. x 8 in. 9 mm Satin Ceramic Wall Tile? It looks similar but there are few pictures of it installed.

Am having installed today. Will update with pictures asap.

Also, while Wayfair calls it Amagansett by Ivy Hill, the boxes that came say Equipe Cerarmics Mallorca and are made in Spain!

Hi Ashley, overall I would say the Amagansett tiles are a good alternative to Zellige for about half the price. The white is warm and has a couple different finishes. I really like the iridescence of it! I like the end result, but the final product is definitely less Zellige looking than I had hoped. Our installer did not use spacers as I asked, but we did grout as the was the manufacturer's recommendation and using in a kitchen. We had awful grout haze (something I wasn't familiar with) after installation and the overall effect was like a matte white tile. I have spent the last couple days using a grout haze remover and a scotch pad on a sander to remove the grout haze and I am much happier. I am wondering if we used a little creamier white grout (or no grout) would the final product be a little warmer? The overall effect is very bright white, but still looks good. I'm sure I will like it even more once the pulls are on, etc. Please excuse the photos as we are still in renovation, waiting for the gas oven to be installed and my husband is making a custom hood out of wood to warm up the white. Sarah thank you so much for the pictures and the post! I love it! I am torn bc I love the tile for our master shower and guest bath. I am just not sure it will look good with the ivy hill Olimpia tile I picked for the floors! 😭

Hi all! I wanted to share a zellige type tile I used. Similar to everyone here I was in love with the look, super confused about thickness and then not having end pieces. I ended up purchasing this zellige tile from our local tile shop where I got all our tile. The color is called “Gris Nuage” and it had pencil end pieces for me trim, you can see far left of picture.
