So are you saying that I should scrape all loose stain - as I was planning - but on sides of the house where the stain just does not want to easily come off (even with stripper) then I can go ahead and prime over this stain? Assuming no peeling on those sides. Thanks

yes it doesn't need to come off if it's adhered properly.

Thank you for this advice, yes I am happy to hear this, I’m not concerned about removing the stain where it is peeling but I am relieved I don’t have to remove the strongly adhered solid stain. I tried removing it from the deck rails and it was nearly impossible.

One more thing, if the house is dirty, please clean it, so you are not painting over dirt.

Re stain on wood. If the stain is applied too thick, it will not allow the moisture in the wood to evaporate, thus the peeling. Probably happens with paint too.

@cat_ky how would you recommend I clean? I’d like to avoid power washing if I can. the walls aren’t especially dirty

if you don't want to pressure wash. spray on a mold and mildew killer and spray of with water hose

Have you thought about media blasting?

Do you know what product this stain is? I use Solid color stain from Sherwin Williams "woodscapes' but it leaves almost no build up on the surface- there would be nothing to peel.
