As far as I can tell from this otherwise too far away view it is carpet bugle. In my area it occurs part of the time as a spontaneous lawn weed and it looks like this may have happened in the instance you are showing also.

Yep. That’s Ajuga reptans. Various common names. I know it as Blue Bugle.

Ajuga reptans 'Catlin's Giant' is a taller form with eight inch flower spikes. I use it under shrubs.

next time... and i hope there is one.. pick a singe flower stalk.. and take a closer pic for us ... this one was easy ... so it didnt matter.. but next time it might matter...

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to leave it as is. Once the flowers die, I'll mow over it. I've been doing it for years. It gets bigger every year and I like it better than grass. Doesn't grow tall and chokes everything else out..
