Looking good Debra! I now have lots of eyes coming up but nothing leafed out yet. If I do not get spraying against the deer tomorrow I will have a big problem. They had better not ravage the garden tonight or early morning.

I took a tour around yesterday and didn't see much damage on anything despite a low of 29ºF the night before. I had the odd floppy hosta leaf but by and large I am very pleased that it wasn't worse.

I don't cover anything because that starts up a Sophie's Choice of decisions- who is special and who is not? Yes, I love this one but not that one? I can't do it, lol. I can't possibly protect everything so my decision is to protect nothing and let them fend for themselves. All I saw any real damage on were some crepe myrtle leaf buds.

Cearbhaill, I know what you mean..... I really only covered the hostas that we’re beginning to leaf out or who’s pip were up several inches. I only have about 20 pots for covering so when I was out, I was out. i think the big thing here was those 30-34 F degree temps were only for an hour or two, not the entire evening nor did we have high 20 degree F temps either.

My Liberty is up about 14-16 inches. The trash can barely fit over it last week. It's cold here today and overcast, we are expecting temperatures in the 30's tonight. Hopefully, it will stay above 35 or so and will only be for a couple of hours. It will be 80 here midweek. Last year we had snow in May. Seducer is also up a good 8-10 inches. Wolverine suddenly popped up on Friday and is 5 inches high or so. I covered as much as I could perhaps 35 pots or so but once they start to grow it's hard to find containers large enough to cover them without damaging the leaves.

All My hostas are pipping now except a few. Tuesday it’s supposed to be 73. Tonight it’s supposed to o get to 34 for an hour and the rest of the week the night temps will consistently be in the forties and fifties. The extended outlook for the next month shows no sign of frost expected, but how do they know that? Is it based on some scientific weather formula....the farmers almanac.......or is it just one big guess???? I have always wondered that. But since Tuesday is going to be warm, I will probably drench that day. Today it’s 44 and with the wind, to me, it feels freezing! Too cold to work outside!! 🥶

Only 3 yet to surface. One a late riser, I fear for the other 2. Lots of stuff did well, leafed out and uncovered:

Frosty Morn, Hawaiian Luau, Krugerrand, Petticoat Junction, Ruffed Up - no damage in the coldest area with little to no tree canopy. I always thought that helped and it seemed to help as lots of stuff under trees were OK. Probably depends on how cold it gets.

Lemon Love Note, Obsession and Wolverine also did well in the open.

Appletini, Apple Candy, Gypsy Rose, Jet Stream, June, Kisuji, Lakeside Dragonfly, Mourning Dove, Neptune, Paul's Glory, Prairie Sky and others all did well either under trees and/or close to the house.

More telling is what got covered and still showed damage: Diamond Lake, Etched Glass and William Lachman. The first two were only pips and still got damaged. Anything with plantaginea in it did poorly. Spartacus was uncovered and damaged although it had tree canopy and right next to other undamaged and unprotected Hosta.

Steve, Spartacus looks good.... too bad Love Song lost her head! I still have a number not showing..... many of the mice are not pipped yet, except Mighty Mouse which I covered all winter hoping it would not heave. I see no signs of heave with the others, but can’t find pips yet. Tomorrow is supposed to be 70’s so I will hunt for them then.

Love Song only lost her head in the pic. Yes, UTOG's Spartacus looks good in the other thread. Mine, not so much, but then I posted Bridal Falls. Am I the only one confused here?
