I'd remove the desk and shelves and put in floor to ceiling bookshelves. Depending on the width, you might be able to get away with a pre-fab bookcase instead of custom.

And though you didn't ask, I'd consider painting the brick white and getting a simpler fire screen.

Hi Krista803. What room is behind the fireplace? Can that nook be converted to a closet on the other side? Then, drywall from the fireplace corner to the window wall. May have to recess a bit depending on the window position. Good luck with your project.

thanks Sue. shower is on the other side so I don't want to get involved in any

all great ideas. My favorite is possibly the bookcase to fill the desk area and painting the fireplace white....

If you are going to do shelves as a replacement: tear it all out, then build it out before putting in a new set of shelves. It’s way too deep. It doesn’t have to be fancy, it will be hidden. If you don’t want shelves have it built out as just a wall slightly recessed and put a plant there.

You could build in a safe at eye level, hidden by hinged cabinet doors. Bookshelves or board game storage below. Plain shelves could also hold out of season pillows. Open shelves could hold firewood.
