Ideas for hiding ugly wall ac unit

Any ideas for hiding this ugly wall air conditioning unit, short of taking it out? It works, and patching the side of the house so it doesn't look awful out there isn't really something I want to do right now. Would love to put in a mini split instead, but not sure that space is right for that either. A couple houses on our street have these though I'm not sure why this is a thing. It's not that much more powerful than a window unit, wrecks up the side of the house, and can't be serviced if it has an issue.

Paint it to match the wall.

What is below it? Is there room for a bookcase and you could put something on the top shelf to hide the AC, like a plant, picture frame or vase? You could even use a tall bookcase and have the back cut out where the AC unit is with nothing in front of it on that shelf. Or when not in use, you could put books or small things on the shelf in front of the AC. Since it does not fit flat against the wall, it would be hard to cover it up with a picture or mirror or other art work.

There was a dining table in the room, because it's technically the dining room, but now we switched things around and the living room is beneath it. It's our only decent wall for a sofa so there's really no way to put a shelf there to hide it.

Wow, I would never have thought of painting it. I'm not sure how well it would take paint, and there's the vent part which would be tricky. If left any of it unpainted, which we'd have to, it would kind of defeat the purpose.

Can't put any kind of cover on it like you would with a radiator? Unfortunately it's too low for a mini split.

A photo from further away would help. Where is this in the room? Assuming you use it in the summer?

This is the room as a dining room. I can also get a picture with the sofa as we have it set up now.

We actually use it very rarely in the summer. It's not even close to being as efficient and effective as newer window unit.

If you don’t use it, then the options are pretty open to what you could do. I’ll wait for the sofa photo before I comment to see the room layout

Still hard to see in this photo, but what do you think of a variation of one of these ideas? It will still look strangely placed on the wall, but not as industrial ugly as ac unit.

obviously you can’t do the shelves w the couch there but some variation might work

heres a lady that just put a framed print over it. It does stick out obviously but it’s an idea.

Sorry, it's just a mess in there right now so I was getting old pictures. :)

These are some great ideas. This is more what I had in mind, something to hide it completely, sort of like radiator covers.

Here's another picture. Sorry about the mess.

I feel like a picture stuck on with velcro would fall off with the toddler jumping around on the sofa. That's clever though. I do like the white one that looks like a radiator cover; that's a good option. Nothing we do is going to look amazing, but that would look better than what's there. I wish I could just remove it, but the exterior of the house is old brick and it would be very difficult to find a good match to patch it up.

did you post the photo of the radiator cover/idea that you had? it did not post.

yes, I agree with a toddler, that would not be a good idea at all. You could enclose it in a cabinet with flat front - like dry walled in. then put a photo/artwork on the flat part, if that makes sense. the art would be attached to the wall just like any other frame.

if you did put a cabinet cover there like the white one above, you could paint the same color as the wall - it might not stand out as much?

if you removed it, could you put a window there instead of trying to match the brick - just first thought that came to my mind. maybe it could be a cool shape window and not just a rectangle? not sure how much that would cost. or I wonder if you could cut a window to match the one next to it. again I have no idea how much it costs to add in a window. it might be too close to the corner for that though?

Sorry, I meant that first picture you posted. I think it's a cabinet, but the patterned grating looks like some radiator covers. I think that's a decent look.

A window is a possibility, but it's right next to an old wooden window which could never be matched. It's old unpainted wood, with a deep sill. Probably harder to match than exterior brick. After all with unmatching brick we could always try to hide it with a tree/bush outside.

What about a stained glass window? Not sure you have to try to match the existing window, just that they go together.

I like that white radiator cover looking cabinet too. Has some interest. Should be very inexpensive to create.

I don’t care for the glads designs if any of these windows, but it gives the idea of what one could look like as far as the framing. Your house style seems like it would fit in nicely, with the old window And arches. Just a thought. After looking at it more, if $$ wasn’t a concern (which it almost always is...), I’d design a unique glass Window. of course, it’s hard to tell the style of your whole house by these couple photos. Reminds me of my first house though and I wanted to put a stained glass transom in but we moved before I got it done.
