You can limewash or mortar wash anything, even the accent borders on the drive. It will likely last a few years, just like when a concrete patio is painted with concrete and porch paint. You'll have to tweak it from time to time, but I don't think I'd find that objectionable. It all depends on the traffic.

The decision to lighten is fantastic. Even from the photos you already get an idea of how much fresher it will look. You can mortar wash. You may also consider doing concrete paint for more of an opaque look.

The ground will attract dirt. Anything light will show dirt. Make up your mind if you want it light or not.
