Setting might suggest a dogwood species (not Flowering dogwood -- flowers are wrong).

Depending on where this is growing in NY, good possibilities are Viburnum prunifolium or Viburnum lentago. Both are tree-form and colonizing species, and superb fruit producers for aesthetics and wildlife.

As noted: some closer photos - including consideration of collection of a flowering branch - in order to see the smaller diagnostic details is always helpful.
