If you are the renter and don't want to make permanent changes, I'd buy an inexpensive cotton rug or runner that you can wash - we all drop that occasional clean garment on the floor when doing laundry, and buy an inexpensive shade or washable curtain. Looks like there might be hardware on the window for a rod, if not, a tension rod would work.

I have cotton washable rugs from Hook and Loom in a couple of bathrooms, they wash and dry beautifully.
