I agree. Scrunch a leaf. It will smell like burnt roast beef if it is I foetida. Hence the name. aka Stinking Gladwyn. It produces orange berries and seeds around.

It does put out the berries, but not nearly as dramatically as internet images show. Perhaps you need rain for that. :)

I find this to be a very useful plant for dry shade conditions. I have clumps of it in my garden growing amongst rhododendrons in an area that receives very little direct sun and only natural rainfall.

This is the pale yellow variety ‘Citrina’ which spreads itself in my garden. It’s a handy evergreen but the flowered sheafs do get ratty by the end if winter. The straight species is native in woodland round here.

I can't get a smell out of it but I'm happy with this identification. This is a really dry area (especially lately) so anything that can live without water is a keeper.*

*I think it would actually be a lot of work to get rid of these!

Did you really crush the leaf? It should smell pretty bad.

is this the same variety of iris? It does not have a bad smell. I’ve never seen berries but I usually take the dead flowers off to the base

I foetidissima only comes in the colour you have, ‘Citrina’ and one with a variegated leaf. Afaik there are no other cultivars.

Mine really doesn't stink. I smooshed it up pretty good. Perhaps it doesn't smell much because it's been growing in drought conditions and is a bit underhydrated? I doubt we've had 8" of rain this past 12 months...
