Wait until its leaves mature & post another closeup including a twig/buds. You can transplant these at such small size, but prb'ly need to wait for spring while still dormant. It will have a taproot & you'd need to try to recover as much of that as reasonable. I transplanted a shellbark hickory a bit larger than that without a problem (it's almost 30' tall now).

Perhaps a Sambucus such as S. racemosa?

Hmm. I have planted sambuccus canadensis and maybe another variety nearby but not close enough to sucker. Could this be self sown? None of them have taken off in the few years since planting. I’m hoping they just need time.

I have a few shagbark hickories. How snd when might I know if it’s one of those? That would be worth transplanting to me. Right now this is very close to a maple.

For future reference, Sambucus are opposite branching.
