Hans did not do well for me. Its been limping along in a pot after nearly dying in the ground. Sugar Daddy would be my choice. I think they do well.

Agree with Steve, Hans is not doing well and it’s the one I would remove as well. BUT, it appears to be sporting so I would pot it up, not too deep and see how it does. I think I would also use something to help support the leaves........ a piece of circular wire maybe to gently hold the leaves upright.

The leaf margins of Sugar Daddy can be prone to getting a sawtooth effect making them unsightly. If anyone has the Hostapedia (Mark Zilis) they can see the pic. That appears to be happening with yours. However if you get it in the ground it might do very well for you.

Yes, I meant put Sugar Daddy in the ground. Baby Hans in a pot or in that trough where Sugar Daddy is growing now. Be sure to throw it on the driveway first.

I grew a trio of Sugar Daddy hostas for years, moving them here and there to try to get them to not shred. They got a lot of TLC from me. The young ones as they came up always looked fantastic, and held great promise. So beautiful! But about three weeks after opening their borders would start to shred. The borders wouldn't hold themselves together as the weeks went on. By the middle of the season the borders would be mostly gone, and the leaves would look horrid. After trying them in deep shade, partial shade, mostly sun, and full sun, I finally gave up and threw them away. I put a lot of work into those hostas, and waited along time before seeing the light and tossing them.

Your luck may be better.

I did not know that about hostas with white center, needing more sun to do well. There are a couple I should probably move. Arggggggg.........more to add to the list to do.

I think the thought is that those hosta that do not have much green in the leaves don't have as much opportunity to make chlorophyll . . . well, something like that. So they need more light/sun.

I know what you mean about the to do list. Mine is so long too!

I think Hans is supposed to be very similar to Andrew. My Andrew has been a slow grower but I was excited this year to go from 4 eyes to 8. This is last year - as he has matured the white center has narrowed.
