Stuck halfway though kitchen facelift

last modified: 5 years ago

We recently gave (are still in the process of giving) our outdated kitchen a 1500$ facelift. I have included before and after photos.

The question I have is what to do with the table/island. I want a slightly longer seated island but wonder if I should just go with a long table in the center of the kitchen. We do not have a dedicated dining room since it is just the two of us.

Pretty color on the cabinets. Can you post a picture of the table area as it is now?

if you have a work table in mind...if you center it that gives you two uses..some prep and then seating. The kitchen is freshly painted but long term a renovation would happen as its older. Normally I'd work w eating zone off to the side but for a time period, [ until a bigger reno occurs and also marks off dining zone] ... i can see the point of a centered country style work table, that serves as your eating spot. What are the long term plans etc ? that figures in.

I might get a slightly larger wheeled island, hard to tell from photo angle. What I would do is move it closer to the dishwasher if there’s manoeuverability

(Tried to fix spelling.) Is there room to move around the island if you move it?

Bought the house in late Jan and moved in after replacing all the popcorn ceilings and adding attic access. Quotes on new kitchens have been upwards of 40k. This is our first house purchase So not sure when we’ll have an extra 45k lying around :). My mom was diagnosed with ALS end of Feb and we are being conservative in case we need to contribute to her long term care. We spent 4 weeks on this remodel. We prepped the cabinets so well — prepping, sanding, gluing etc. they are from 1961!! We want this to last at least 5-7 years and then see where we are at. So far all furniture in the kitchen Is second hand deals.

Try moving your chairs up to the wheeled island cart and pretend the cart is a longer island. I think you'll find that there isn't enough room to add a much longer island there. A table that expands would be a workable option.

look on craigs list and find the table you like if not the one you have. You have a sort of vision and I'd go with it. there are many tables on CR LIST. I'd go a little eclectic and not spend too much. Just enjoy the fresh looking space. But looking at the sq footage....long term I think opening a wall or marking off the seating area to the side by going with a tighter galley or U kitchen might happen. so easy does it right now. Good Luck.

I would go for the big central table. I grew up with a set up like that and I miss that style today (tables instead of islands). There's nothing like sitting around the kitchen table, and it has so many uses. when you want to dress it up, centerpieces for the dinner can make it quite special. The rest of the time, its a place of work and comfort, no awkward counter height seating etc. good luck though and sorry about your mom.

The island is adorable but so small. I think I’d use that elsewhere as a bar cart or something.
Do a big eclectic table and chairs in the middle.
I think of this is a five year plan and then reassess. I’d leave most of this. Rather save up for the future even if it’s 10 years for a complete remodel.
Very cute clean airy space! And if this is your forever home you’ll want more of an open floor plan sooner than later I assume. Good luck!!

I too think a larger table in the middle would be better. I do like the little cart though, and perhaps you can use it as a bar cart. I'm thinking what people used to call eat in kitchens, with a farmhouse style table.

Thank you! I can resell the little mid century table (although it does have a large leaf) and purchase a larger table like these. I see where you are going with this and I like it!! Thank you all!

I'm thinking having a dining table and island would allow you to have two functioning spaces, one for prepping food and also a comfortable dining area especially if this is the only dining space you have. The kitchen chairs are close enough to turn and face you at the island verses squeezing stools into a pretty tight space. A new table and chairs in lighter colors could help unite your color palate. Given the square room and rectangular island a round table may be visually less heavy and give you more leg room underneath. Ikea's Docksta table is 40" and could work or paint your exiting table white and just add new chairs if budget is an issue.

These new chairs, Karlijan by Ikea are very reasonable and have good reviews, this color is turquoise.

Also a small rug under your island could also help give it more weight and dimension. Ikea has a few small options and there are ton's out there on the internet as well. You did a nice job on the cabinets, they look great! Like your counter top choice as well. Sorry to hear your Mom's diagnosis, maybe an Elderly Waiver program could be something to look into?

I have purchased a small runner and some wall art (looks a bit like Miami 1970 :)). Here is just a rearrangement .. will likely look for a new table and sell this one. I think I like this better! This is so helpful!

Ps. We are looking into everything. My family is not wealthy and it costs 50k a month for her to stay on a ventilator at home. ALS is cruel.

The rearrangement looks great and the pendant over the table is perfect. Great cabinet colour!

If they still sell that "Island", buy a second one and put a new top across both of them to make a larger island. Have the a top overlap on one side for seating. Keep the other table for when guests come over. LOVE what you did!
